Look familiar?
This story has been making the rounds on a lot of other aviation/modeling websites over the last two weeks. General consensus is that its an F-4 600 gal centerline tank. The origins of the tank is in dispute because of the condition the tank is in. There is no way the remaining portion of the tank would be in that good condition after being dropped of a jet moving at a few hundred miles an hour. War stock left behind after the US pulled out has been suggested as the origin.
The guy did a good job on the conversion. I wonder how stable it is.

Better yet wonder what happened to the drop tanks during WW2?
I know that lot of the drop tanks from WWII were re-purposed after being dropped. When found by the germans they were scrapped, same as shot down allied aircraft that were not able to be repaired. Civilians used em too for all kinds of things.
That is one of the reasons that the paper tanks were invented and used. Why give your enemy a strategic material in any quantity that you are blockading. The paper drop tanks came from a nice renewable Allied resource- trees, and once dropped gave the Germans nothing but litter all over their beautiful countryside. And anyone who has been to Germany knows how much the Germans abhor that sort of thing.
But if they were made out of paper, weren’t they biodegradable? That means in WW2, we were not only ridding the world of tyrants, we were doing it in an earth-friendly way while minimizing our carbon footprint. [*-)]

I remember reading about a B-24 crewman who, in the 1970’s, went to the crash site of his plane that was shot down. The town had a big party for him and presented him with an oxygen tank from his a/c that was cut in half and used as a water pail.
