I’ve titled this shot: One Lucky SOB

Image source: National Museum of Naval Aviation

Here’s the info that accompanied the image:

On 31 January 1950 Midshipman Frank E. Toy of Composite Squadron (VC) 24 was piloting a TBM-3S Avenger during carrier qualifications on board the escort carrier Palau (CVE 122). After making five successful traps, he approached the carrier for his sixth landing. His approach was low, but the Landing Signal Officer (LSO) gave him the “cut” signal. Chopping his throttle momentarily, Toy changed his mind and pushed the throttle full forward intending to go around for another try. However, he did so a moment too late for the Avenger’s tailhook caught the #5 wire and the plane flew into the port catwalk. Fortunately, the left wheel caught the edge of the 20mm gun sponson, but Toy found himself in a predicament, hanging upside down from his harness with the waters of the Atlantic Ocean staring him in the face. Rather than face a cold swim, Toy grabbed hold of a line thrown to him, tied it to his plane, and proceeded to make his way back to the carrier. The plane was not so lucky for it was eventually pushed over the side.

I would caption this one as “I hate when this happens!”

“I’d like a new airplane and a clean set of skivvies…”

“There has to be easier ways to go waterskiing!!”

or

“Don’t you guys let new shipmates on this ship???”

WOW!!! cool pic Steve, thanks for sharing. later.

Neat pic. He was lucky to survive.

Regards, Rick

That’s a great photo, Steve! That’s for supplying these.

Is that light colored patch of water trailing behind him an “oil slick” or a “pilot slick”? I know which one it would be if that was me.

I wonder if Midshipman Toy got to officially qualify that day…I’m sure he must have gotten a fairly robust dressing down…

LOL, shoulda saved the plane and tossed the pilot! [;)]
