I’ve done some reading and it appears that Michael Wittman was at Kursk?
“The battle for Prokhorovka marked the high water mark of the German southern drive for Kursk. At the apex of the thrust were the 14 tiger tanks of the 13 Heavy Tank Company, 1st SS Panzer Division Liebstandarte, led by Michael Wittman.”
Can anyone lend any confirmation to this? If so, what would the markings on his tank be at that time? I just ordered some Zimm for the AFV Michael Wittman Tiger I just got, and was thinking if I can’t find the box containing the Marder II which I was building for the Kursk GB which I believe my wife misplaced, then I would just go ahead and build thsi thing for the Kursk GB, instead. What say you Tigerman? Right now the only thing fromt he Marder I can work on are the Friuls I bought for it.
Also it appears that the suspension on the AFV Tiger, can be left operable? This could lend itself to a good accurate looking detailed dio.
Wittman was at Kursk. Turret number 1331. However, he was in an early Tiger-no zimm. The AFV kit that you have is a late Tiger(unless it is the Cyberhobby special edit-oops-the Cyberhobby kit is a Dragon product.), used on the western front-sorry.
I’ll let the resident experts point out the differences between the two-early & late.
Sorry Michael, but Bob is correct. The Tiger Late wasn’t at Kursk. Most noticable differences are the newer cupola and the all-steel roadwheels on the late. The late also had zimmerit.
…actually there is an unverified report that Wittman may have been the first tanker to utilize field-applied zimmerit during Kursk: his Tiger drove through a ditch filled with mud…he stopped the tank, got out and tried to scrape the mud off with his pocketcomb, and viola!
I have this kit in the stash. And ironicly am wanting to build it after the Marder II that I too am suposed to be building for the Kursk GB. Great minds think alike? Work has us working INSANE hours right now. All I wanna do is build but all I get to do is work and sleep.I picked up the Cav. Zim. Looks fantastic in the package lol. Have eyed a PE set too. Let me know when/if you start yours.
Tiger question. AFV or academy (cant remember) make cheap indy tracks for the tiger but are called the early track. Am I correct to assume early tracks were for early tigers and not the late? Whats the differance?
Not sure when I will start it. I’ve already started the SturmTiger which is the same kit until it’s time to put the usperstructure on. As far as tracks, Academy makes cheap tracks. Not sure about the whole early/late thing. I THINK it’s the width that is the difference.
BTW I have started it, and I bought the CAV zimm for it. Matches up VERY nicely. You will have to decide which parts on the kit and which parts molded into teh zimm you will be using. I did a mix of the two. The zimm fits so perfectly, that you can cut out some of the parts molded in the Zimm, and it fits right around the parts in the kit perfectly.
