WIP - AccurateMiniatures 1/48 SBD-3 Dauntless

I considered that possibility, but when I laid the IP over the decal the black circles matched the dials - not mirrored. Maybe I’m wrong, but I think the IP turned out nice regardless. I will build up a few more layers of future in the dials before final construction. [:)]

I stand corrected! Don’t get me wrong I wasn’t saying yours didn’t turn out well at all. You’re very good at detailing. Keep it up!

Amazing model [bow]

Can´t wait to see her finished…

Keep on work man !

Best regards,

[:O] All the above mate!!! Fantastic job

A small update for tonight:

Made some progress on the engine, still have a few touches before I deem it “finished”

And my Ultracast seats arrived, shipping from Just Plane Hobbies was extremely fast!

I also joined the fuselage halves and started rescribing the panel lines. I prepped everything that still needed to be painted Interior Green including the seats, gunner’s turret, and the interior color of the canopies. The seats remainging cockpit parts have been gloss coated and washed, and will receive a flat coat tomorrow.

Stay tuned!

Is that the kit engine? If so, great detail, and great job on detailing it. And as somebody indicated earlier in the thread, you’re really moving quick on this build. Wish I could get that much done so quick. I spent an hour trying to get canopy and windscreen masked on a P-40N this morning and am not even half done yet.

Thanks for posting and keep up the great work.

Yep, that’s the kit engine. The cylinders, pushrods/ignition harness, crankcase, and propeller shaft are all seperate pieces. It’s only dry fit in that picture.

I painted the cylinders black and highlighted them with a silver Prismacolor colored pencil

Haha I feel ya there, I spent several hours masking the 5-piece canopy for this thing.

That’s awesome looking! Looking great.

I am really loving your WIP…always wanted to tackle the dauntless…great pictures!!!

Another small update, seats and turret are painted. I’ve since attached the gunner’s seat to the turrent and the pilot’s seat to the bulkhead. Once I finish rescribing the fuselage, it will be time to complete the cockpit and itnstall the floor. Then it’s all downhill from there (I hope!)

All parts were painted interior green, then I picked out the belts with MM Sand on a 000 brush and painted the buckles silve. The shafts on the turret were painted “scale black” and scratches added with a colored pencil. The pad on the turret was painted brown and dry-brushed with tan.

After that I brushed on a few coats of Future on everything and let it dry. I then added a wash with a mix of brown and dark green, and dry-brushed all the green parts with Aeromaster interior yellow. Then I finished up with some Polyscale Flat and retouched the silver bits with the colored pencil again.

Its looking great, and that IS a great kit. I did one a few years back with yellow wings. The kits cockpit is probally one of the best in plastic I’ve ever seen, and you are certainly doing justice to it. The painting on the seat belt is really nice, care to share how you get that ‘grungy’ look? Can’t wait to see more.

Amazing detail work! SUPER!

Time for another update!

The cockpit is complete, fuselage halves joined and seams taken care of. Fuselage and wings have been rescribed and the wings attached. Everything went together well with no gaps, except for the leading edge of the wing root - small hole on each side to fill.

Very nice Brewer. I’m learning a lot here. Can you explain why you rescribed all your panel lines, instead of just the ones that were sanded over? Also how do you scribe those small rectangular panels? I’m using tape as a guide when I scribe my panel lines, and I assume you are using an easier method for those small bits.

scott

I rescribe all of the panel lines so that they respond better to washes after all of the paint work is done. Also, I like having deep panel lines when I do my decals - they settle in better that way in my experience.

As for a method for the small panels, I wish I could tell you some special secret way to do it - but I actually do it all freehand. I start with very light pressure, basically just dragging my tool along the line with gravity being the only pressure until the groove is deep enough to apply more pressure without the tool jumping out.

I scribe all of the panel lines that cross seams before sanding the seam away as that makes it much easier to restore the line.

More progress!

Finished the main construction - assembled, scribed, and attached horizontal stabilizers and nose of the fuselage. The cowl is assembled but will be left off until paintwork is complete.

I masked off the cockpit with Tamiya tape, and sprayed a light coat of primer to check my scribing. Then it was on to preshading and this is where it sits. I may try to get the underside painted this evening.

So it’s starting to look like a Dauntless now!

Got the base colors on upper and lower surfaces. Paints were my own blend of Tamiya acrylics. Lower surfaces were a mix of Flat White and Sky Gray to reach my own interpretation of light gray. The blue is a mix of Flat White again, with a small addition of Medium Blue. The paints were so thin it looks like they didn’t even cover the preshading inside the panel lines - might not even need a wash for this one haha

WOWZA!!!

That SBD really is spectaclar. Seeing yours is really giving me the itch to dig mine back out. [tup]

Question for you- How do the clear parts look in your kit? Mine are a tad cloudy, and almost have a texture to them. Thought about polishing them out, but have never tried that on a clear part with a lot of framing.

Keep up the beautiful work, this bird of yours is absolutely stunning! [bow]

My clear pieces weren’t cloudy, but had a few microscopic scratches on them. I just dipped them in Future and let them dry - perfect now. [tup]
