WIP 1/700 Tamiya Yamato

A stalled build for many years that I get to clear the bench during lockdown.

Never intended to be a full out build (which is essential because I have never completed a project that I started with ambition) as a result there are some deficiencies in the build that are impossible to correct afterwards, but at least it’s easier to say ‘stop, that’s enough, it’s never going to be such and such anyway’.

It’s a bit of a kit bash of the Tamiya kit, plus the Fujimi Yamato’s detail set (the previously mainstay kit from the late 90’s before the ‘Next’ series a few years ago and the ‘retooled’ one this year.). Mostly because the Fujimi kit had its ups but anything on the upper structure are rather softly molded so I thought why waste a half decent detail set on an undeserving kit?

It’s also not ‘just’ the Tamiya kit, but rather the finemold/tamiya collaboration that includes finemold’s oldish nanodread injection aftermarket set for Yamato - which are mostly type 96 AA guns (covered and not) and clear search lights, and 2 rather niche frets of PE for mostly the aft deck section. Not that comprehensive because it’s the early nanodread days (more recent finemold sets eg for Musashi comes with more bits, including davits, boats, Type89 AA guns, binoculars, anchors, and more, released since the olden days.

Current progress

I think it’s a good looking boat, and I like the Imgur pics to zoom in on.

Most of the fittings now complete. weathering/rigging etc left

She is looking pretty darn good from where I sit…Cheers mark

Rigging done, just more weathering left

Nice rigging. Usual question. What did you use?

This:

When I cannot be bothered stretching sprue (or more like, when a secure rig for an almost complete model is not ready) Stretched sprues are great, sags naturally and have better shape when ‘tightened’ however takes more patience to handle…

Metal wires however, are fairly forgiving and durable, if not always really really straight.

Looks great!

Excellent job! I may try that Modelkasten metal rigging on small scale sailing ships!
