I like to paint my models as usual with Tamiya acrylic, then airbrush a sloppy coat of thinned vallejo white over the whole thing. After that’s dry, I mix rubbing alcohol and water 50/50, dip a tissue in this mixture, then wad it up and blot the surface. It does a great job of “chipping” the white, and if you’re careful it won’t damage the basecoat, but it is a good idea to have a coat of clear laquer in between. You can do a little or a lot of blotting to weather the white to your taste. Thing is, waterbase paint doesn’t really fade like other types - it either chips or streaks. So while nicely airbrushed translucent white may look nice, it isn’t very realistic.
Some pictures of my Panther G, weathered in this manner. Don’t apply the alcohol mixture with a brush unless you want an effect like the streaks on the mantlet.
I think the best method I’v seen to date is white chalk dust mixed with water and put on with a brush.
This look’s far more convincing when you consider whitewash was usuall applied in the field with sweeping brush’s and mop’s,just add plenty of spill’s on the flat surfaces.
Airbrushed whitewash just look’s too uniform in my opinion.
