Sort of a general question here guys. In my case, this would be an F-89J with wingtip fuel tanks.
Naturally, these tanks are round. So, would the end of the wing be curved to fit this contour or would there be a noticable gap between the two since their profiles would be different? I hope this makes sense and I’m sure this would be a case by case situation. However, what is more likely?
There’s rarely any gap. Even in cases where the tip tank was optional or jettisonable, the tank has a cavity to into which the wing tip fits (F2H Banshee), or the tank mounts to the very bottom of the wing tip and has a concavity (F-80). Where the tank is permanent, and the F-89 may be one of those, there is definitely no gap.
Bones,
Take a look at this site. Shows a good photo.
