Just got my Christmas present from the inlaws today. A Wingnut Wings Sopwith Pup.
1 - Wow this looks like a great kit.
2 - Probably the best packaging - box, manual, etc - that I’ve EVER seen. And I have a Tamiya Storch and Spit VIII in the stash…
3 - I still think it’s unbelievably awesome that Peter Jackson owns a model company.
4 - I may not be able to resist this one for long!
They are beautiful kits & build into great models. Looking forward to seeing your Pup.

Knew you’d love 'em Doogs! [Y] I have 3 so far, the Albatros D.V, the SE.5a, and the Pfalz D.IIIa (which I’m currently working on for your excellent ‘Weathering’ GB). Still plan on getting the Pup too, and the D.VII when it comes out. They are amazing kits!

Been seriously thinking of picking up one of their kits.
I’m not ready for one of those… the instruction manual is beutiful. I like the detail pictures of actual planes. Might be nice to have a couple stashed away.
A Wingnut GB would be pretty awesome.
To be honest, I’m not ready for this! The idea of rigging up a biplane fills me with dread. But I’ve found I always tend to do better with kits like this. It’s like…they cost more so I don’t want to mess them up…so I end up going a lot slower, taking my time, and NOT messing them up. Too badly, at least.
Certainly have been hearing superlatives when the subject of WingNut comes up. And just in time for a WWI Group Build. However, I’ve learned that (especially among modelers willing to pay $60 for a biplane) that a “great” build can mean a different thing than if the word was used by someone who’s just finished a Tamiya Corsair.
I’ve checked their web site and read a lot of reviews and know they’re complex kits. That’s fine. But how do they go together? Are we looking at a polished, complicated expensive two winged Tamiya? Or is these planes closer to the Pacific Coast offerings - supposedly filled with detail, historically accurate to a fault and needing a tube of putty and a chain saw to assemble.
I like the looks of all of their planes. Pup had lovely lines - one of the really pleasing aircraft to the eye I can think of. (Some of the Nieuports were close in the looks department to my eye.) But the idea of rolling out the oils for an Albatros is really sweet too. (Wish they’d made a MkIII - then you could paint it red. MkIII had cleaner lines to boot.) Price is fine for a quality kit - no problem with that.
Should I buy one?

I was lucky enough to be able to inspect the SE5 kit at a local show and grabbed it for $40! The freaking thing is beautiful! The instruction sheet alone is an enciclopedia. Don’t be scared with the rigging part, its actually fun specially making the turnbuckles from stretched hollow platic Q Tip handles. Same method as stretching sprue. They hold the shape so the nylon thread can slip thru. Way cheaper than the metal ones.
Eric, I have read several build article and while complex the do go together quite well. i am chomping at the bit to start mine. Might be April 30 at midnight.
BTW Doogs… should I put you down for the Pup in WWI GB?[whstl]
Haven’t built it yet…but the Pup looks gorgeous on the sprue, and the reviews I’ve read lead me to believe it’ll be similar to the Zvezda La-5. That is…it’ll be complicated and demand that you pay attention…but if you do it’ll go together right and reward you with an awesome kit.
As for the WWI GB…probably. I’m severely overcommitted in GBs, but I’m going to have to bail on some of them. Not enough time, especially since the wife and I are about to start building a house, which means getting the current house cleaned up and cleared out and ready to sell, so bench time is going to get iffy as the year goes on.
I have spent a lot of time over on the Aerodrome Forum, and apparently, they go together quite well according to those who have built them.
I will be purchasing their 1/32 Gotha soon, though I have no idea if I’ll actually ever build it!
I have been looking but after reading all the good things i think ill pull the trigger and get one .now witch one to buy. Ron
I build 1/72 so haven’t paid a lot of attention to the WNW kits, but one of the comments I’ve read say paint can cause fit issues on the first kits, and tolerances actually had to be loosened on the later kits. If paint can keep parts apart I would assume that means not much need for putty.
There are NO fit issues. In fact from the kits I’ve seen and monitored the progress of the build, they follow the very same steps of assembly as did the real aircraft. These are better than Tamiya IMO.
OK. Doog talked me into buying a LA5. (Looks good in the box: so did the Eduard FW190A5 that’s going to sit with it. The build has been an adventure. Hoping for a steadier hand and some luck from Russia.) So I guess I need a Wing Nut. The only question is a Pup or an Albatross. The Pup is so pretty, but painting the Albatross would really bring out the inner child. I’ve got an Ehmer MKI British tank - the two of would make a good entry in the GB. Course I posted a finished a dreadnaught the day before the Build was announced. Wonder if I could work Konig in?
