Any suggestions on how to simulate black window tint for 1:24 scale models?

I’ve been toying with tint ideas myself. I haven’t tried it yet, but I work at a dealership and we have a gal who does detailing and tint jobs. I was going to try getting some of her scrap tint material and slap that on my model. I think it’s sticky on one side so all you have to do is apply it to the plastic and burnish down nice and smooth. Then install as per usual. I wonder if you could do that as well? Go down to a car detailing place and ask around?

Chris, I think that might be to thick and hard to work with on such a small scale project.

Years ago in California they used a liquid product. They would float it on with water and once the proper tint level was reached, they would use a squeegee to set it.

I think using Swanny’s method or a transparent paint would be easier. [;)]

I’ve used smoke and future. The first time it was an uneven tone. The second time I dipped with the part at a better angle. You want your curves on the horizontal not the vertical. It seems like common sense, but I screwed it up the first time. The darker you want it use more smoke.

Back in the days of RC planes I used to tint my canopies in black Rit dye… the undilted liquid in a bottle. well… diluted just enough to get it to cover the canopy i was tinting. This was not syrene though so experiment first and some scrap. Rememebr to get the air bubbles off or you get spots.

I think you’re right. I was talking to the tint gal a few minutes after I posted that, and it seems more problematic than I thought. You gotta use a soapy water mix to activate the adhesive in it and all that. I think the darkened Future method might be the best way to go after all.

I had tried to use real tint before. There’s too much left overs and tint is thick for scale puposes. The only problem with the future and smoke is waste. If you can save the left overs good, but to dip a window still uses alot of paint to make the mixture.

I wonder… how about spraying the mixture instead of dipping?

I’ve used rattle cans of transparent paint before to tint windows on my car models. [;)]

I tinted the canopy of a 1/72 B-2 by spraying Smoke, worked just fine.
