Willys color question

Hey all,

I am working on a Tamiya willys MB as a gift for my grandpa and i have a slight dilemma. The instructions call for Tamiya TS-5 olive drab as the color but sadly my LHS only had TS -28 which is olive drab (2) I grabbed it but am worried that it will not be correct. He was a MP in Italy and I am trying to match his jeep he used.

Will this color be ok, i mean it is olive drab but it seems more green than the standard.

Thanks,

Dave

Do you own an airbrush? XF-62 is the equivalent of ts-5. That’s the bad thing about the spray-cans, you cant mix the colors

Does your LHS carry the regular Tamiya paints in addition to the spray colors? Tamiya Olive Drab XF-62 is a better choice. Just buy their thinner as well for either hand brushing or airbrushing it. Straight out of the bottle w/o thinner Tamiya paints do not hand brush well.

Pretty much any OD will do. The color of actual vehicles varied greatly due to different paint manufacturers, lot number, factory, weather exposure, etc., etc., etc… I personally prefer the Testors Model Master OD Green in the spray can.

I really like Tamiya Khaki Drab for smaller US vehicles… Others come out much too dark or green. Khaki Drab is, in my opinion, just right… Its plenty light, and its definitely as brown as it is green, which looks exceptional and accurate to me.

in order:

Sadly i do not own a AB, i never really learned how to use one so i never got one.

The do have the bottle of OD and thinner and i am well used to hand painting with them (i painted figures for a long time)

I will look into the MM OD and the Khaki Drab colors as well!

Thanks all! Ill have pics up soon, ill start a WIP on it in a bit =D

You may want to consider grabing one of those “airbrush in a can” deals. Some of them work great for one-color coating paint job and you can mix and match your paints to achieve the one desired. I may still have one can somewhere that worked awesome, I have to dig and see the brand…

Harbor Freight has a sweet deal on an AB package. Dual action AB w/compressor for $90 Several guys in my club use that AB and I have seen great stuff from the guys. You have a Harbor Freight store on Union St.

This is the setup
