Will this stuff work for a final / dull coat?

I live I small a small town in Iowa(10,500pop.), so I’m forced to stock up on modelling supplies when I’m in Des Moines or Omaha(2hours either way). I don’t have any clear/dull coat, so I stopped at the local Wal Mart and all they had was KRYLON “Matte Finish”. The contents are: Resin, Hydrocarbon propellent, Toluene, and Acetone.(It was in the craft section)
Anyone ever try this stuff and do you guys think this will work? Let me know if I should just get on the Internet and order something else.

HEY,
I should work. You may want to test it on a scrap peice that you painted to make sure it doesnt react with the paint. Should work tho.

Chuck,
I agree with Randy. One other suggestion: Try spraying some of the finish into either your airbrush color cup or spray bottle so you can put on some light coats to see how it fares.

Careful - may trash your decals.

EEEK! Good point, I didn’t even think about the decals. Do you think a good coat of future over the decals will protect them?

Might not be a bad idea. If you are going to use this stuff do the light coat routine. I think I would take a piece of scrap plastic - paint it - stick an old decal on it and experiment.

I purchased the exact spray can for the same reason, 7thCavScout. It does work quite well. I’m no experienced modeler, so I’m not real sure what a correct matte finish should look like. However, I tried it on a Zero that I had already screwed up. I had tried to wipe away a wash on the wings with laquer thinner and messed up the underpaint, even though it had been coated with Future. But that’s another story. Anyway, I decided to go ahead and see how the spray can matte finish would look. Everywhere but the wings looked great. In fact, I couldn’t tell the difference between the decals and the paint. I don’t know if it’s supposed to be like that or not. I guess if you do things right the decals should look that good, but from my standpoint, I was impressed. On the other hand, the wings where I had eaten through the Future coat already with laquer thinner really messed up with the matte finish. It crinkled up badly.

So, to make a long story short, the spray can matte finish worked, as long as you have a coat of Future.

P.S. - Another of my many mistakes was to unmask the canope before applying the matte finish. I have a real nice frosted glass canope to go with my paint crinkled wings. :slight_smile:
