Trying to wrap up my cockpit of my 1/32 JU88-A1 (with many PE pre-painted parts). Base painting is done so it’s time to move onto the weathering stage. I painted the interior base coat using Tamiya Arcylics but have some of the details, including the seats and metallic area with Model Master Enamels. I know it is better to seal the base paints using a glosscoat first before adding a wash to darken the recess areas (and later drybrusing). I read arcylic clear coat to protect from artist oils thinned with mineral spirits is best. However, upon inventory I noticed I only have Model Masters Enamel Gloss Coat. I am pretty sure there is no problem putting this over both my acrylic and enamel base paints but I am worried that my oil paints that I plan on thinning with Mineral Spirits could damage the clear coat? Wanted to put it on tonight and didn’t want to add a trip to the store to slow me down. So will my MM Enamel Gloss Coast be okay for this?
I fear this will not end well if you do. I have had a couple of occasions where I didn’t properly apply my future coat to protect enamels paints before adding the wash. It has the same effect as paint stripper.
Yes, to be honest, I am not sold on using Future as I have heard a mixed bag of results with it. It is even hard to find in stores (I have been looking for it everywhere). Also, I would rather not try to airbrush it as that also seems finicky. For adding clear coats I am still okay with using a spray can which will keep things simple and quick.
So if I don’t want to use Future would the Tamiya Acrylic Gloss Coat be the safest bet? I know where I can get some locally but it’s to far of a drive to do it tonight… oh well. Maybe I should try my MM Enamel Gloss Coat on a small separate cockpit piece to see how it goes. Say one of the seats!
i have oil washed and water washed over Tamiya, MMA, PolyS, and Vallejo/Vallejo Air WITHOUT a barrier with no problems. not even an acrylic semigloss or flat overspray on the paint. i do prime everything prior to painting. the pnly time i had a problem was dulcoat over Tamiya which ran like crazy over the MMA camo. After walking away for a day and learning some new words i was able to turn this into a positive.
A simple answer to your question is NO. If your glosscoat is enamel and you run a solvent type wash it will lift and wrinkle the paint, specially over large areas.
You need a barrier when using a solvent wash over enamels. I would not risk it over lacquers either just in case the milder wash reacts on the lacquer. On cured acrylics you may use an acrylic wash without a barrier as these two do not react the same as solvent types.
I use Future all the time as a barrier on my enamels and it works just fine. It just needs to cure at least for a day or two.
An alternative to future is Alclad Aquagloss which is water based and cures faster than Future.
