What’s the motivation behind our model building passion? Someone should do a poll…
Is it the physical beauty of the airplane itself? The challenge behind making making small pieces of plastic resin and brass come alive? Is it as simple as the color scheme? The research behind the men and the machines?
Why do some prefere older planes vs jets? Why jets over propeller?
I chose prop planes simply because WW2 is my passion and this is the only way I can hold these planes in my hand. It is also great stress relief and they are good teaching tools for my high school students.
I love the challenge and the great feeling of satisfaction when I actually complete a kit. I haven’t given it much thought before, but I think I like the WWII props better because the machinery and operation was so much more personal, IMHO. I am, however, working on an F-15…
Actually all the reasons you mentioned… a great combination of interests distilled into one hobby - history, flight, and art. I’ll do props & jets, but early props (1920-1930) since so much was unknown and so many different wild ideas were being tried.
I lovehistory war and aviation. Also, I used to want toys of all the things I saw at the movies, but I couldn’t find them. But model kits of them DID exist…
For me it is very relaxing to build a model, and also very fufilling to excersise the creative side of my brain. Having a shelfull of nice models to look at is the icing on the cake!
When I started, I figured it was the only way I would get to see a three dimensional version of these machines. Then I discovered museums…And I’m still building models.
I need something besides crack cocaine to be addicted to.
Just kidding. I have three kids that keep me very busy, but I very much value my private time. Modeling is a chance for me to create something by myself. I figure if I spray enough harmful chemicals through my airbrush, then that should keep everyone else in the family a safe distance away. Just kidding again. Or am I?
Why do we build? Hmmmmmmm…
Relaxation, as an outlet for creativity, to study history, to be able to hold a piece of art in your hands, and because I’m bloody good at it.
I have a passion for all things WWII, couple that with an interest in a local disused WWII airfield and you have someome who wants to have apart of it for himself. Modelling brings to life those bygone times.
An interest in WWII aviation and a way to relax and learn more about the aircraft. Also a way to remember those who gave it all for a way of life. Modeling also allows me to view aircraft that very few people have heard about like the Swanny Luft 46 builds or the Morane Saulniers or the Italian 3 engine bombers - Sparievo i think.
Why props? That was a time in aviation where a pilots skills was the difference between life and death and not some computer/radar combination that allows you to score a kill without even seeing the bad guy. And besides, prop jobs are prettier than jets.
Why??? Because all my golf buddies moved away… oh wait… that’s why I got back into model building. I got hooked at a very early age and just always had a fascination for anything WWII. I still do it because I enjoy being creative and its a good way to unwind after a long day (until you knock over the bottle of super glue anyway).
