Why are my posted pics fuzzy?

This is probably not the right place to ask this question, but I thought it would get the most attention here.

I’ve noticed that my posted pics are fuzzy around the edges of the subject within, whereas some of the other members pics are quite clear. I lose a lot of detail and it makes my models appear much worse than they really are. (Click on the UHU in my sig and you’ll see what I mean)

Is this a problem with loss of data in the transfer process? Should I use a different format (like BMP, rather than JPG)? Should I try a different host site?

Help, thanks,

stinger

Stinger,

I think that .jpg files are the only one’s allowed to be posted, as they are the smaller file format for pictures. Probably the reason for the fuzzy edges that you’re getting is resolution. I always use the highest setting on my digital camera (5 megapixel), so that I get the best-looking pictures. When posting them on-line, the website that I post them to (Ron George’s site) automatically resizes them (I have no idea how this is done) to fit for viewing with your web browser. That way, the pictures look nice and sharp. The lower you go in resolution, the grainier, and therefore, the fuzzier your pictures will appear on-line. But, that’s just a guess. Try giving a higher resolution for your pictures a try.

By the way, when I enlarged your Uhu picture, it looked fine on my laptop’s screen. Maybe it’s your computer’s screen causing the problems?? Try another monitor if you can, and see what happens. Good Luck!!!

I noticed you photo server company is resizing your photos down by 20%. This may be an option you can change on the photo server so your photos are posted the same size as you sent them. If not get another photo company.
Bill.

Thanks guys - The only camera I have is a 1.2 meg Sony Mavica. The original pics look great when I view the file directly off my hard drive, so I think it must be a problem with my server.

WW - My server also auto resizes my pics. They look just as bad when I go to my host site:

I don’t resize them myself anymore (and I know that’s a problem for some members with slow connections, sorry), but I do that so that it can at least be enlarged. Glad to know that my pics come up alright on your screen, though. Maybe I can email you the original pic and you can tell me if there is a difference?

As far as my monitor goes, I don’t think that is the problem. I have noticed that other members pics also look fuzzy, whereas others (e.g. JHulks) pics are quite clear. Maybe you’re right about the megapix resolution, but right now this is the only camera that I have. Guess I’ll just put up with it until I get my 5meg Nikon SLR.[:)]

Bill - I think I’ll try Ron Georges site, or maybe Photobucket. Haven’t registered with them yet, but I’ll look into it.

Thanks again all,

stinger

Sounds great to me. My e-mail address is marinesgt@sbcglobal.net. Just send it whenever you get a chance.

Stinger, your pics look alright to me for 1.x MP… maybe try a little more light, although if I remember right that first pic in your sig looks like it is shot outdoors…

I’d try photobucket or one of the others… I dont think they autoresize, I believe on photobucket you have to specify for each pic that you want resized and by how much…

And don’t worry… your models look better than mine do at 8 megapixels haha

WW - Thanks, I’d just be curious to see if the original looks better than what you see from my posted pic. I’ll send the original to you via email.

Tom - Thanks for the compliment.
You’re right, the Do17 was shot out on my back patio. Not the best setting, but all I had at the time. I really need to set up a better photo background.
I’ll try out another host site and see if it improves.

Thanks again for your suggestions,

stinger
