It’s just around the corner !! Who’s planning on going ? This will be my first Nats and my son and I can’t wait. My wife is even going to enter something(her severed foot diorama). She’s working on a decapitated head that she’s hoping to have finished for the contest. Hope everyone has a great time !!!
I’m with camo junkie on this one, it’s way too far to go to Columbus, Ohio for IMPS. Now if it was in Chicago that’s another story.[;)]
The only big show I plan on attending is AMPS in Auburn, Indiana next year. Since I figured out it’s only about a 2-3 hour drive(depending on traffic.)
Well Mike & Camo, I’m coming all the way from Texas. I see where its only 3-4 hours from Clinton, MI and a bit over 5 from Chicago. I’ve driven 3 to 5 hours for some regional shows. You gotta want to do it. I got a set of airline tickets on creditcard points - so my modeling purchases have paid for my transportation!
The show is the largest hobby shop under one roof for its four day run. Get a chance to see old friends and make new ones. Get a chance to see & buy some new kits - many special releases for the show, many that your LHS will never stock
Now is the time of year when people begin whining, “when is the convention coming to my town”. You either have to decide to go to it, or you need to pull yourself together and put in a bid for it. The bids for the 2011 show are being held this year. It is to be in the eastern third of the country. Bids for the show in 2012 in the middle third of the country will be heard next year in Phoenix. Now is the time you should begin working on bid for that. When we bid for the 2000 show in Dallas, we had been working on it for two years.
I’m with a junior modelclub comp team, and we have stuff at IPMS. I’m really new, ,so I’m getting the hang of it, but I won’t be there in person. I should have 2 model there though. 'll have to check.
I am planning to go even tho I am not member of IPMS. Indianapolis is only 2.5-3 driving hours away from Columbus and I can not miss this great opporunity to attend this conference for the FIRST time. I haven’t decided which day I should go… originally I was planning to attend on Friday the 21st for a day but now my young boys want to come with me too so in this case we can only go on Saturday the 22nd only.
I’d like to know if it is a bad idea to go on Saturday especially that it is the last day… will I miss alot? Will vendors be running low or out of kits and stuff on sale? Any advise will be helpful… thanks!
Since the judging will have been held Friday night, all the models will be there. Awards arn’t announced until the banquet on Saturday night so you won’t know who won.
New/limited run items which may be snapped up early, like the Two Bobs Buckeye trainer, will be gone by Saturday. Most of the small manufacturers and reps who are selling their catalog of stuff generally have most of their stuff. Second-hand vendors stuff may be fairly well picked over. You will find that the major manufacturers (Revell, Dragon, etc) will be there showing but don’t have anything to sell. They don’t want to undercut their vendors.
Generally between noon and two the vendors go into panic sales. They would rather sell their stuff than take it home. Prices drop until closing time which will be about 5 on Saturday. Things shut down early on Saturday so that those who are going to the banquet can go to the hotel to clean up. The vendors generally try to clear out so they can hit the road back home.
If you’re only going for one day – Saturday is a good choice. You might not get first pickin’s but you will find some bargains later in the day and all the models will be there for examination. Because it is a short day you’ll want to be there early in the day. If you don’t get there until noon you will be rushed and wont be able to participate in as much as you would like.
You do not need to be a member to go to the vendors room and to check the models. You must be a member to enter a model in the competition
im confused? [%-)] do you have to be a member or no? do you have to be to have your stuff judged?? i still dont thinkk im going my anniversary is the 18th. the wife said i should go though…not sure!
You do not have to be a member of IPMS to go to the convention, access the vendor room, or the display room. You must either pay the one-day walk in fee or pay/register for the whole four days. On-site seminars (with the exception of the business meeting) are included. Off-site trips are extra cost.
If you want to enter a model to be judged you must be an active paid-up member.
What you membership gets you is a quarterly journal. It is much improved under the current editor Chris Bucholz. You may recognize the name as the proprietor of Obscureo Aircraft models. The magazine as been described as rivaling some of the slick European mags. It is not just an airplane-centered mag. Recently almost an entire edition was given over to the M60A2; walkaround, drawings, how to fix the existing model …
You also get a discount at many hobby shops. This may well include HobbyTowns as well as mom & pop shops. Check yours to see if they participate.
You also get access to member-only content at the IPMS-USA site
