My question is… the mock battles… do those ships really fire weapons of some sort at each other? You showed some battle damage, that was intense.
That really opened my eyes to ship model building. Very interesting.

I’ve seen something about this before somewhere - you can get tiny cannons that shoot BB’s for this very purpose - small scale sea battles.
I bet these guys (and maybe even gals) are having more fun than we’ve all had in months doing this!! Go for it - I’d love to see one of these regattas.

Yeah, I mean they are having actual 1/72 Sea Battles… craziness.
Yep… CO2 powered BB cannons. The hulls have Balsa panels that can be penetrated (and repaired) easily. Electronics are in a watertight compatment for obvious reasons and the floodable compartments have bilge pumps though they are limited in pumping capicity. these ships are not usually very detailed, small parts can and would be shot away during combat. I saw one pic once of a ship that was damaged and starting to sink ramming the one that shot him up.
Oh My gosh, when you say not very detailed, you must not have LOOKED at some of those images.

because it is still missing the lifeboats, and all the AA guns.
Plus I want to detail it more, and we have to

You’re right, these folks are definitely out there. I saw some photos a couple of years ago from an Australian RC group. One guy had a humungous radio controlled Sunderland flying boat rigged to drop depth charges. Yes, they exploded on contact with the water. Another guy had an equally large U-boat that was rigged to fire an anti-aircraft missile, non-explosive. The photo sequence showed the Sunderland’s depth charge exploding close aboard the U-boat … and the U-boat’s missile taking off the Sunderland’s starboard horizontal stabilizer!!! Unbelievable!

Umi, I was making a comparison to a display model, who would want to put PE rails on one of these and replace them every weekend? There are some very nice ships on the club website
You wil get to see one of mine in a few weeks. I’ve started on the C. W. Morgan as i put the finishing touches on some armour. I also had couple on temporary display at NTC Great Lakes when I was there.
Honestly, I would love to put PE rails on my ships. The problem is I have to make them myself. I have done a bit of research on the subject, but just haven’t gotten around to experimenting any more than building one of my Mast structures, on a light cruiser, as a PE part. It held up for 8 years too. Some peoples ships shoot too high.[:(!]
I currently do all my own resin casting, and a friend wants me to try vacuforming since I am using a large vacuum pump for the molding process.
But replacing a length of PE railing would certainly be easier than having to replace all the individual stancions and the restring the railing which is currently what I have to do.[;)]
I won’t claim to be doing museum quality ships, But I do a lot of photo research for my projects, and try to get them right.
This HO scale, Washington State ferry boat is my ultra scale challenge.
This would be a nice place start putting in the PE railings.
As most of the railings are chainlink sections in a welded frame.
Umi, I have an article on PE, I’ll dig it up if you want. I noticed in your club rules that seem to be more interested in building and sailing accurate ships than in actual combat unlike some clubs, really liked that shot of “squadron manouvers” with several ships turning in unison. One of these days i’ll do an R/C DD and go play on the lake.
