Who knows what kit this was?

When I was a kid my Dad built a model of a tank. This was in the early 70’s.

The model was of a German tank and when you looked down the hatch, and held the model up to the light, you could see a photo of another tank. Any ideas?

[%-)][%-)][%-)][%-)] I haven’t a clue. Welcome to the forums though asennad. I’m curious though.

Aurora did these 1/48 scale kits in 1971-72. They were called “Photo-Scope”. I believe, but I may be wrong, that the only two of their tank series were reissued with Photo-Scope. The Stalin tank and the Tiger tank. They came with a vacuformed base and a little peep scope to look inside the hatch.

Since your dad had a German tank, and Aurora only did a Tiger and a Panther, it should be a Tiger. Additionally, what Aurora marketed as a Tiger was truly a King Tiger or Tiger II.

WOW,

See, Major Rob, - you know almost everything !

Put me on the reserve list for “Major Rob’s Guide to Military Modeling”

[#ditto] to that! What a curiosity. I wonder if you could find pics of these things somewhere now, just to see what they look like.

You know I think that’s the one. [:)]

I found a couple of examples on eBay of Aurora Tiger Tanks under completed items. They don’t mention PhotoScope however. As it was said, perhaps that was only an option for a couple of years.

I got that tank in grade one or two. The teacher had offered me the class snake at the end of the school year. A tiny little grass snake. My Mom said I could have “anything in the world” but not that snake. I wanted a COX 2 channel RC plane but as that was nearly $100 turns out “anything” had a price limit of 10 bucks. Still I loved that tank.

I probably ended up blowing it up with firecrackers, as I had a habit of doing that.[}:)]

When I come to think of it, I had what must have been the Aurora Stalin, which was my first tank at about the time mentioned. I don’t remember the Photo-scope though.

Photo-Scope was just a reissue of a couple of existing kits. Both the Tiger and Stalin had already been issued in the long box (original) and square box (with vacuformed base) years prior to being reissued as Photo-Scope.

The Photo-Scope kits are rather rare since they were only produced for a short while.

They must be worth a pretty penny today.
