Saw a thread on Facebook today advertising a drawing for a free $200 gift certificate to MegaHobby. Went to sign up, but in the Terms Of Service there’s all this hoo-ha about an outfit called UPICKEM and how if you sign up for the drawing you grant them access to your personal information. They don’t appear to be associated with MegaHobby at all. So, I’m wondering, who is UPICKEM? Does Kalmbach/FSM know? Pretty shady way to access my info in what is clearly a marketing ploy in return for a drawing with prizes if you ask me. Not too cool.
The internet is FULL of scams like this, using false advertising headers to get you to click on them . Be wary and always read the url to see where it’s really taking you.
also note if you ever get these links in in your email dont click on it IF you really want to check out the link right mouse click it open in new window many people have had there whole email program screwed up but clicking direct
I’m pretty sure opening a link in a new window won’t do anything to protect users. The browser sends the same information it would if it were left-clicked.
Thing is, this was posted on Finescale’s Facebook page. By FSM. It wasn’t your typical email spam/scam nor was it one of those clickable ads. I know enough to stay away from those. Just disappointed FSM wouldn’t have vetted this a little better.
I’ve had legitimate business’ that I’ve tried to sign into through Facebook flash up a box that said something like “by checking yes you agree to allow abc.com to access your friends email addresses”. I think in some cases it’s just a way to mine new names and addresses for their sales departments.
