I am thinking of making my hobby into a career as there is a
need for a good hobby shop where I am and for the love of the hobby.
So…I am wondering “Who are we modellers?”
What is the age range?
When do we start this hobby ,during school days or after we get a
steady job?
What draws us to the hobby and why do we continue?
Married or single?
as for myself I am a male ,31 years old ,married and have a son.
I got really serious into the hobby only 2 years ago but have been
modelling since the age of 6.
I do it because I love the challenge and want that model that I built and painted
on display in my house.Just because I love the look of it.
[:)]
Thanks for your time.
i am 36, married, with four children. (hurray the youngest wants a car kit)
i have been modeling for about twenty years. seriously for about the last ten.
i build what i build to give myself a small chance to pay homage to those who fought and in some cases died for what we have today.
i focused my research attention on pearl harbor about thirteen years ago. and i am planning on building approx. sixty of the a/c involved from both sides. other projects are in the planning stages but have not materialized yet.
I"m male, about to turn 22. I started modeling about 10 years ago, mostly with aircraft, and exclusively in 1/48 scale. Did that for a couple of years, built my skils, then moved on to armour. It was prior to high school that I started, but due to a serious lack of funds, I’d only accumulated around 20 or so aircraft in a span of a couple of years. Once university started, I also found myself working much more, and by extension spending a lot more on models [:)]
What draws me to this hobby is the machinery itself. I’ve always been fascinated by aircraft and war machines. When I discovered models, I was hooked for good. This is a hobby for me, but also an obsession. It allows me to trully be with my own thoughts, and when it comes down to being able to unwind and forget everything, nothing does it like models do it. There have been countless late nights where I’d sit in my basement, paint and construct away. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to stop this, and I know for a fact I never will want to.
I"m not married, yet. I do have a gf of a few years now. She’s not really into the whole thing, but understands that it is a relaxing activity for me. Her only quarrel is the fact that I spend so much money on this stuff. Come to think of it, so did every other gf I had before this one. I guess it’s universal. What can you do, right? [:)]
I am 32 years old, engaged and have 3 kids. Started at the age of 10 when my dad got me my first kit a Mercedes race car (man I wish I could find that kit again just to bring back the memories). Been on and off again in this hobby due to the lack of funds. Now that I got a good stable job. My main interests are 1/48 scale WW2 aircraft, mostly german aircraft. Lately I have been getting into modern era 1/48 scale aircraft. I do armor sometimes just for the simple fact that I only live and work near the U.S. Army Ordnance Museum. So you can say that I always have a good resource for that. The real reason I mostly do aircraft is that I was an avionics mechanic in the army and a licensed airframe and powerplant mechanic and have always have loved the looks of aircraft. Bryan
Anyway, what draws me to this hobby is that I like to build things… (Mom never let me have Legos -- Still mad over that… ) So, I build models ^^
I also like being one of the few females in the hobby… Call me odd if you will
My favorite subjects are usually aircraft and mecha related (Only recently have I fallen in love with WWII aircraft… I need more! lol )
I have no idea how long I’ve been modeling… But I’ve been modeling serriously for like 3 years or so now… I have a pretty big collection too (That my mom, obviously, does not like… She wants me to be more girlish shrugs )
Anyhoo, I love this hobby too much to get out of it (And maybe it is my dad’s fault… he has a huge collection of old car models, but I don’t like cars much anyway… )
My website has some examples of my work… But it’s in major need of an update -__- Some day…
Hey Akuma, went to your site and have to say that your Corsair isnt that far off. I have a pic of a Marine Corp Corsair in black at I forget at a Marine Corp Museum.
Seems like there are quite a few thirty somethings. I myself am 30. In highschool I tried to build the testors “Top Gun” F14 and F5, but thinking back now, they must have really sucked.
Anyway I just really got into the hobby a year ago and have been fully consumed by it since. The reason I was drawn in and continue is a love for model things; I tried to do trains at on time, but the space needed was too much, so I moved into model aircraft. I probably chose aircraft because in my real world they are more unique than cars and feel less warish than armour.
Married (thank god because if I weren’t already I would probably have no chance of ever being in the future [:p])
I am 15 yrs old so i am obviously not married! I started modeling a year ago, but before that i had had Legos (since I was 3) Pretty much right after I grew out of those i started painting figures, 1 year later (last summer) I built my first model… and it goes from there. Probably around Last March, I started builing seriously.
I do it because I really love History. [:D] I also like the way they look, they’er just cool to look at.
Sometimes my friends will Hassel me when I dont have money for something becuse i spend it all on models. they are not to into models ( I have two friends that have built a model, no pait or “goodies” though) But I know that I have done A good Job when one of them comes over to my house, looks at one and says, “thats pretty cool”
I am 67 years old and built my first model at the age of 8. Since that time I have been modeling off and on as my work and time would permit. Now that I am retired I find that modeling is a fantastic pastime so I don’t become a veggie. I do so enjoy taking an idea, especially with the diorama that I am buuilding, and using scratchbuilding for the most part making it happen. What a pleasure. Obiwan I wish you lived here in Sumter, SC as we don’t have a LHS. I would be mor than happy to help you set it up and even work for free to help make it a success. I can’t remember who poste it but someone did a fantastic job fo telling what a hobby shop should be. I see if I can find it.
Goold luck in your endevor. I know you will be a great help to your customer base.
Started modeling at 15, enjoyed it for about 5 years, left it for other pursuits. Came back to it this year with a vengeance…I’ve completed 5 kits since February.
I do it because it’s relaxing, and the detail level required is mentally engaging. That and it’s great to see something that you built, and to have people complement you on it.
I am 39 years old. Married with two girls.
I was into the USAF for 13 years for a TSgt. I am retired. I mean real retired. [8D]
I love history. Especially the WWII.
My fave is 1/32 and 1/48 the props. Forget that jets… [:D]
i am 32 years of age, very happily married to my lovely wife for 6 years, and have a 3 yr old daughter.
i dabbled in this hobby as a teeny bopper but wine, women, and general foolishness distracted me most of the time from being serious about it. and the fact that my mom threatened to murder me after spilling duck egg blue paint on the brand new carpet of my bedroom in our brand spanking new house she and my father were working so hard to pay for!! after that incident, me and my paacshe VL and H were banished to the garage and i live in lower alabama where the intense heat will discourage anybody from trying to work on anything in a garage, even at night!! after bouncing around in the college days and 4 years of the navy, i was at age 26 and getting married before i could blink an eye. i started my own construction buisiness at age 25 and i didnt run it, it ran me until i figured out how to actually run a buisiness a couple of years ago. and now, at age 32 i needed something to kinda take my mind off of building houses, so i came back to this hobby in July of 03’ out of the blue. i always remembered the enjoyment of those couple of crappy looking models i did assemble as a teen. i discovered a half assembled P-51D in a chest full of highschool memoribilia i had stashed away at my parents home. my stepmom brought the chest to my attention and i hadn’t opened the chest since i graduated highschool!! along with the half assembled model, lay the paacshe H and the skeleton of a former VL. i used the half assembled kit as airbrush fodder and here i am today, love it.
i love WWII history, that to me was the last “real” war where it was clear objective and the people of that generation were absolutely in one accord. i respect my grandparents who were all involved. i’m drawn to aviation of all branches, but my favorite period is WWII fighters. the shear, raw skill it took to shoot down another plane with while flying yours is just mind warping to me. and, my favorite bird of all time is the P-51D in all types of markings, but my favorite one is “Old Crow”. i plan to build as many stangs as my life and budget will allow. i will build other subjects, but i will most likely always have a stang on the bench along with it. below are the 3 models that i’ve completed in the year i’ve been in the hobby. i hope to add many more to this collection as i’ve enjoyed looking at these. later.
At age of 6 I went to toy store (which doubled as hobby shop in Pittsburg, TX in 1962) and spent a no-doubt hard-won 50 cents on an Aurora B-47. It must have been some tiny scale, because the box was about seven inches long. I bought it because it was the one airplane I knew well because my dad flew them when I was even smaller. The model came out with the wings upside down, completely covered in dried tube glue and fingerprints. That night, my dad went out with me and we got a 1/48 biplane whose type eludes me right now. It, too, was Aurora, and it was molded in metalic green plastic. I was hooked forever then, and now I’m 48 and don’t (usually) get the wings upside down any more. Just a sweet memory I’m passing on.
Speaking of sweet memories, do any of you old-timers out there remember how each model manufacturer had its own distinctive smell that greeted you when you ripped off the celephane and opened that magic box the first time. I especially remember Lindberg’s, as well as Revell’s smell. It was like no other. I don’t think anyone but a modeler would consider these plastic smells pleasant. I got to relive that smell a while back when, while browsing in a Mexican department store toy dept., I came across a whole bunch of those Revell scaled-to-fit-the-box kits from the 60s with the original magnificent box art. Lessee, I picked up Martin P6M Seamaster (a cancelled program, it was a seaplane powered by four afterburning J-75s; all six or more prototypes were ordered destroyed), a Martin Mariner, a P2V in Operation Deepfreeze markings and arctic scene box art, and many more Revells in that series, plus a Monogram T-28. All for a dollar apiece or less. Each one of those Revell kits exuded that lost childhood smell when I opened them. Unfortunately, I lost them in the fire with rest of my kit collection.
Age 33…married…one daughter of 1 and one child on the way…built some as a kid…took 10 years off and came back about 9 years ago. I build usually at night when the wife and daughter are asleep…or when I am stressed or highly ticked off… I like the relaxation it brings (at least until I glue a piece to my finger) and enjoy the finished product. Also-- I am building every WWII 1/48 plane I can get my hands on [:)]
To start, I’m 59. I started modeling wwhen I was 7 or 8, to have some accurate military things to play with. There was a lhs on the way to school, and i would stop often to see what they had. They dealt with plastic and rc. I did the minimum with the kits, just glueing them together. Some cars, I brush painted some wierd colors. When I got too old to play with them, I quit buying
When I got out of the service, I had a couple weeks before I started work, and little money. I did have enough to buy a 1/32 Revell Wildcat, and that got me back into the hobby. Now I have become more of a collector than a finisher. I probably have 15 kits in process. If i see a kit that interests me, on sale,I buy it. I don’t get many at the lhs, because they seldom run sales.
I have watched a lot of lhs’s go out of business around here. I’m not sure if it is a lack of interest, or poor locations. I’ve also watched the hobby sections in places like Walmart shrink to next to nothing. I know the lhs can’t afford to carry all the things I like, because not everyone else likes them too. So again, I can’t buy them there. A coworker knows I build’ and he has a grandson who is interested in building. He asked if he could bring the grandson over to see my finished models. Of course, I said yes. When he leaves, I’m going to give him a kit. Maybe that will help to keep him interested in the hobby.
If you decide to go into business, I wish you the best.
I’m 16, male, and single. No steady job (yet. Very soon, hopefully.). I put my first kit together when I was about 6 or 7, (Snap together Tomcat, 1/48 I believe.) I built a few others, and they are now in a dark corner of my basement, and nobody talks about them anymore. [:D] I started seriously modeling only about a year ago, and actually only have one completed model under my belt, and about 5 that are getting there, but need an airbrush. I usually build after school, but not much lately for lack of funds. (No job, remember?) I have now decided to model aircraft in exclusively 1/72, and I prefer WWII subjects, but I’ll build anything in a heartbeat.
I am 38 years old ( mentally about 12 [(-D][(-D]) im sort of married got 2 kids , i started modelling when i was 6 , did only airfix done the spitfires and all the ww2 stuff , liked doing 747’s , done a few ships , when i was 12 i did 3 or 4 tanks , i then had a rest for 25 years and started again about 1/12 years ago
Well, if you’re trolling for demographics, I might as well give you the “Pix profile.” [(-D]
I’ll be 49 in August, single, no offspring ( the thought of "mini me"s is too horrifying to comprehend).
I started building kits in the early 60s. Mostly WW II aircraft (my father flew B-24s & P-51s in WW II), but also cars & some armor. I stopped building around 1970 when I became a sound engineer, playing nightclubs until '93. By that time I was a hopeless alcoholic & drug user. I became disabled in '93, became sober, and I needed to connect with the person I used to be. That person built models. I bought kits from the limited selection at the local department store, and stumbled onto a copy of FSM. That’s where I learned how much this hobby had changed. Armed with the phone numbers of mail order suppliers, I ordered kits the way I ordered drinks (read: a LOT !) [(-D]
Were I to estimate the number of kits I’ve built, I’d have to guess 500 or so.
So there you have it. The Pix profile. Put it to good use, my friend.[:D]
no, not odd, just something to lust for [:D]
It is a good thing that there is at least some female representation, as this hobby really needs it. BTW, the models on your site look pretty nice. Wanna see that B2 finished [:)]
