Which wash for which era????????

Ok, I’ve played around with quite a few washes in my time, but I’m kinda curious, how do you dertermine which wash to use to suit the a/c?

What do you base it on?
Is it artistic licence, or is it era based?

I’m currently finishing an A7D Corsair II, and have used MM Raw Umber to bring out the panel lines, and to add some light dirty streaks to the underside, but is this the right tone to use?

I might be losing the plot on this one, but I’ve read alot of FSM mags, and alot of different colours have been used for washes, but how does one know if it’s ‘right’ or not?

Thanks in advance

Sean

I use washes to simulate shadows. I mix the base color with black until I reach a shade that matches the shadows I see on the model under a light. Sometimes this means multiple washes in specific areas. I recently built a Stormovik with three topside & one underside color. Each area received a wash of a different color, but with the same relative darkness. I do the same with washes I apply to interiors. It is more involved, but it looks better to my eye than using generic colors.
Hope this helps.
