which version would you build

hey all,

I picked up another kit of the Monogram AT-6 Texan today because i enjoyed it in the past,my question is this, the natuaral aluminum version with the red tail and cowling or the chrome yellow trainer version, which would seem to have a more significant historical value?

do a canadian harverd it’s one of the best looking not to mention one of the most historicaly important version (the aerodrome of democracy).

Might I suggest something different. I built the top SNJ-2 out of the seven shown in the link below.

The second SNJ-2 of the Commander Carrier Air Division seemed like a cool scheme as well, but being my wife is from New York I felt obligated to build the New York Naval Air Reserve plane.

Which T-6 did you get. The Monogram or Modelcraft kit? (Assuming 1/48 scale)

If your kit is like the one I’m currently working on, it has the parts for a Harvard. There are so many different markings for the T-6 that your choices are only limited by your imagination and skill. Nearly every country has operated the T-6, including Japan and Germany (post-WWII of course) so you have an endless choice there as well.

that would be the Monogram kit that i bought,i’ve done it several times(cool pilot climbing aboard figure looks great when done),i have one still ,but it will be given away if i choose the natural finishbecause i know how to use metalizers now,but also thought about the yellow version to add color to my display area,it’s hard for me to get away from OOB builds because there is no aftermarket decals availible at the closest HS(75 miles) and i try no to use credit exept for emergencies(wife shot me down on any “hobby related need” as a valid reason to order

The Monogram kit is nice out of the box. I went with a factory fresh natural metal finish. The only thing I added was a P-51 tail wheel I had extra, better detail on the tire. Also filled in the gun trough in the cowl and added antenna wire. Only thing I would have added was better seats. I think the ones out of Accurate Miniatures P-51A’s would have looked a lot better. Later made some resin copies for a future build.

Just a suggestion… isn’t that the plane that is often used to depict Zero’s? Might be a fun project to make it a “Hollywood Zero”?

Assuming that’s the plane they used.

Otherwise… nothing to see here. Move along folks.

(Edit)

Quick Google check…

Here’s an AT-6 heavily converted by the CAF for use in Tora! Tora! Tora!

I’ve been considering getting a second Texan kit to build as a trainer since I’ve decided I’m going to build the one I currently have in my stash as a “Texan” - that is, as a Houston Texan airplane, dark steel blue with various stripes and the bull head logo on the wings where the US insignia would go. I guess I just can’t resist.

That’s sounds cool.

I bet it would look awesome in burnt orange…

Ha! I’d rather paint it hot pink than that awful color …[;)]

The navy version

yup,i’ve decided on the chrome yellow (fs13538) navy trainer version, but i may have to pick up another one or two of this kit,it goes together so well and you’ve all given me a lot of food for thought

I recall about 10 or 15 years ago a female pilot was doing airshows with a pink AT-6. Anybody else remember this?

Ditto on the great builds of the AT-6 and the XF-5F1. While the XF-5F1 was not very successful it did evolve into the F-7F tigercat.
