Hello friends.
I need some recommendation on which model company to settle for in for some great U-Boat`s.
I noticed that Revell Germany has some good ones, and Academy has also a few good ones.
Please let me know.
Well, it depends on how big you want to go…
The biggest plastic U-boat out there currently is the Revell Type VIIC in 1/72. Nice kit, but big (about 37 inches in length).
Revell then does a series of U-boats in several scales, the Type XXI in 1/144, the Type VII in 1/125, a Type 206 in 1/144.
Academy also does boats in various scales, and Nichimo does Type IX and Type VII boats in 1/200.
Mirage of Poland does a series of U-boats in 1/400 scale, and there’s a few in 1/350 from various manufacturers.
Of course, I’m leaving out all of the nukes, attacks, and ‘box scale’ kits that are all over the map as far as scale is concerned.
Hope that helps,
Jeff Herne
Nice.
How is the quality of the Revell models?
Revell Type VII in 1/72- outstanding. plenty of aftemarket adds to the appeal of this model
Revell Type XXI in 1/144- some inaccuracies, but the only larger size model of that Type. Inaccuracies can be fixed pretty easily. Ken Hart did an awesome version of this kit some years ago that was showcased in The SubCommittee REPORT,or one of the older modeling mags…I can’t remember which…(sorry!)
Revell Type VII in 1/125- hull’s good, conning tower, details, railings OOB are poor.
Type 206- good kit overall; showcases unique dive plane arrangements of the Type.
If you have the room, get the 1/72 Type VII…
