Which Putty to Use

Hello Everyone,

What type of putty do you guys recommend? I’m not looking for something to fill small seams (I use superglue for that), but for something that can be used to add bulk to an aileron, for example.

I’ve been using Bondo putty from a tube (sells for about $2), and I’m wondering if the green or white putty put out by Squadron-- I think-- is better. The Bondo is too grainy and also tends to flake off.

Thanks again for your advice.

Take care,

Mark

I like to use auto glazing putty. It’s used to fill tiny scratches and imperfections before a car is painted. It sands easily and is very smooth. One tube will last a long time. I dont think it’s the same product as Bondo.

for a finer grit Squadron White is nice and smooth… but rjplasticmod using something which I cannot recall the name of, porcafiller I believe that is (if I remember right) extremely smooth and he swears by it… maybe you could see if you could contact him on here!

It’s called porc-a-fix. It’ a touch up glaze for damaged porcelain bath fixtures. Works great. You can get it at Home Depot.

oooooo… thanks for the info! I didnt knwo it was that convenient! how’s the sanding on it? does it sand well?

—edit— which department, bath and shower department?

Thanks guys. Maybe I’ll stop by the autoparts store or Home Depot this afternoon.

I actually looked for Porc-a-fix at Lowe’s… they didn’t have it, but they had something that is used to fix wash basins and the like. It looks like a two-part resin. Is that what Porc-a-fix is? This stuff wasn’t cheap, however.

Have you ever tried the Tamiya putty. For anything requiring more fill than a Mr. Surfacer product, the Tamiya putty has been outstanding for me.

Personaly, I use squadron Green stuff, that seems to work best for me. I’ve never tried Squadron White Stuff but I want too.

You can find the porc-a-fix at home depot close to twhere he paint thinner and masking tapes are. I think is in the painting section.

Milliput.

Best putty ever. No contest.

Wow, I have a number of choices. The list:

  1. Auto glazing putty
  2. Porc-a-fix
  3. Squadron Green and White Putty
  4. Milliput
  5. Tamiya Putty

Thanks a lot, guys!

I like milliput simply becauseof its ease of use.

One of its greatest assets its that its water soluble, it can be smoothed and evened out with simply a damp finger, and dries rock hard in a few hours, sandable, drillable, wonderful stuff. Not only great for filling seams and joints, but making stuff too. I used it to make cushions and seatbelts for my Airfix lightning ejector seat, as well as scratchbuilt stuff for all of my models.

If I sound like a sales rep for this stuff, then sorry, but I really do think its one of the best products around, and I swear by it religiously.

Hey John,

Just found it on-line at GreatModels. Thanks for the help. How much working time do you get before that stuff hardens?

By the way, great looking work on those seats. A picture is worth 1000 words, eh?

Take care,

Mark

cheers mark

You get plenty of hardening time, about half an hour before it starts to harden, a good 12 hours to set completely.

Where can I find “milliput” in the Stone Mountain, GA area? Things down here are “so limited”. (God, I crack myself up!)

Hey Vance,

I’m in an Atlanta suburb myself. I’ve been shopping at Hobbytown USA, but I haven’t seen milliput there. However, www.Greatmodels.com has it and has competitive prices, generally fast shipping, and reasonable shipping rates.

I haven’t found any other hooby shops around here that I consider fully stocked. But then I’ve only been here a year.

Take care,

Mark

I use porcifiller… awesome stuff for small jobs, along with Mr surfacer. If I have a gap thats not ona stress joint I use Squadron white or zap a gap. Milliput is the bomb though. I use it to make stuff but not nearly as adept as skii, I just need to use it more. Skii which one do you use… I only been using the grey (medium). I make head rest and things also tubing and stuff like that.

Milliput seems to come in several different varieties. Which one do you recommend, Skii? Thanks.

Hi guys

I use ‘Standard’ yellow Milliput. I also have the white super fine stuff but I find the standard by far to be the easiest to use of the lot.
