Which primer do you use?

My primer is coming out with a very rough texture in some places and I would really like to switch to something better. What are you guys using? I have heard of Kryolon I think, but thats all.

For primer I think you could use any paint, I have heared that you don’t need to prime but I do it anyway. I use Testors primer, the one that can be found at Wal-mart (it’s a light grey) I have also heard of people using car primer.

Once you try TamiyaFineSurface Primer, you will never use anything else. The drawback is the price.

It’s just wierd that we can’t get any right now because of that customs problem

What Customs problem? This is the first I’m hearing this.

It’s been posted in other places but something about the cans being mis-labeled and the whole shipload not allowed in the US because of it. I don’t primer everything but I haven’t been able to find the tamiya primer anywhere.

I find primer to act different than regular white or grey paint. its kinda chalky IMO. it goes on smooth; dries really fast from a rattle can. but it feels rough; like 12000grit sandpaper rough. so it is smooth; but not shinysmooth… lol is that normal? as I say it; it doesnt sound good.

I have found that Gunze Sangyo Mr. Surfacer makes a very nice primer coat. They offer three varations 1200, 1000, and 500. They act as both a base coat and a “filler”. For a primer, I use 1200, thinned 50/50 with lacquer thinner. I run this mixture through my airbrush. The finish is very durable with a light grey color and sands well. By the way, I use the 500 variation as a “paintable” thin putty that fills “pits”.

Tamiya Fine Surface Primer for me as well. I’d like to try some Mr. Surfacer but nobody locally carries it and I never think of it when I’m ordering stuff.

A primer isnt supposed to be Shiny… It needs to be a little rough so the paint can grab on to it better!

thanks for the help guys! I 'll see if the LHS has the Tamiya stuff.

i like using citadel primer from games-workshop it comes in a fairly large can that lasts for FREAKIN ever and paint sticks well.

hope this helps
