Ok its WWII and your given the choice to go into any branch and train to be a pilot… Which branch, war theater, and most important which plane? Mine personaly would have been the marines and flying a F4U-1D(I know like I would have picked anything else [:p]).
I know this isnt a modeling question and sounds like a Batman Vs. Superman question you would ask at the lunch table in elm school but I like ot know what planes inspire other modelers.
This is tough. If we are being nationalistic here, it’d be a close race for he F6F-5 and the F4U-1D in the USN. I’d think I’d go for the F6F. I’ve flown it enough times in MS Combat Flight Sim 2[:D]
If I could chose from ANY fighter for the sake of combat it would be a FW-190D. But I’d also LOVE to fly a Spitfire Mk VIII!
For the Pacific Theater, a sun-faded Marine F-4U1D, or I’d join my squadron as they were then in TBF-1C’s at Munda. As for the ETO, probably a P-51D…though I’ve always liked the P-51C with the Malcolm hood.
For the Eastern front, RAF wit ha DeHaivelland Mosquito. Western, Japanese Shinden. Granted, not exactly American and all, but they were cool planes. Since the Shinden was at the end of the war and none were shot down, I know I’d live through it…
For muscle, I would have to go with the USMC F4U-1D Corsair. Kicked serious butt in the Slot. Look intimidating and had the where-with-all to prove it.
For style and appeal, the USAAF P-51B or C Mustang (with the tail fillet and a malcolm hood). Enough power and grace to fly by second nature. Just think about rolling into a target and it responded immediately.
For survivability and firepower, the USAAF P-38J Lightning. Aside from being able to outclimb a Zero, the centerline guns gave it an advantage that few US fighters had at the time. Many P-38 pilots limped home after losing one engine - can’t say that for Mustangs or Corsairs!
Gimme a P-47M after they worked the bugs out of the engine! Of course ETO/MTO. Enough speed to catch a TA-152 or Do-335, could outdive both and could roll with an FW190… Plus 8 .50 cals…Does it get any better than that?
