Where is your bench?

I hear alot of people saying how they have a room in the living area of their home for modeling. I don’t have room or the blessings of my wife for that.[:O] The area I do have is in my basement. And it is mine. I don’t have to worry about picking up every night or the kids or animals touching something they shouldn’t. As long as I close the door. The only problem I have is that I don’t get alot of natural light. I have a window that I put a fan in when I’m spraying to blow everything out. It has worked very well for the last ten years. JOHN

Mine is right here…in the basement…sometimes clean, sometimes not.

Mine is in a utility room with the washer and dryer as well as cabinets. The wife is not thrilled but I continue to take over space, little by little and next am trying to figure out a niche for a small paint booth. Wish I had better light and ventilation as I hate to pay to run the AC. BTW, I had to have a new garage built to house my HO RR setup, so you can see how thrilled my spouse is about this! [sigh]

Mine’s pretty much wherever in the house there’s an open space [:D]

I used to use my table in the basement, but that’s in dire need of cleaning off (other interests, and there’s like 3 cord of firewood thrown down there to navigate thru), then the dining room table, which the Missus declared off limits to CA and paint, then the computer table that my P-47 components currently occupy…

One more week and I’m probably gonna take over my Stepdaughter’s room when she moves out to Texas on the 24th…

Mine too is in the lower level…err basement. But we really don’t consider it a basement but truly a lower level since it is fully finished and furnished…and best yet it is all manspace to do with and decorate as I want.

The workshop has a solid door that can be locked to keep the little explorers (grandkids) from getting interested in things they shouldn’t when unsupervised. Guest bedroom and full bath for guest who visit…essentially it is a private suite with an aviation theme. Wouldn’t trade for anything…execept maybe a hanger with a airplane included.

It wasn’t always like this…started out in a small closet in an apartment when we were first married. Had a cubby box in the basement at one time, I had a large workshop in a garage for a while…now this twenty nine years later.

I live with my parents still. M bench is in our ever changing room. It started out as the room where my dad had his trains, became the family computer room, then my Ex’s bedroom, back to computer room, now my modeling room. (sort of full circle from the trail modeling room it started as)

Gerald I need to update bench pics since I took your idea of boxart decorations! (Those and some great line drawings from Accu-Mini!)

BTW…I revisit the ‘Vision Aid’ thread often when I need a lift. 19 optics and 2 hands…priceless!

In the living room. Bench is in front of couch, across from the Mrs., who is engaged in her cross-stiching… Various parts storage bins on the back of the couch, and on the floor around it…

Moving past the front door, comes my shelving on the adjacent wall…

All in a 16x20 area… Cozy, ain’t it…

Looks like a slice of heaven Hans

Mine is also in the basement lower level. [swg]

It is about 800-1000 square feet total, with it’s own bathroom and furnishings.

Heh… Yeah… I’ve been in sandbag bunkers that have more room…

Wow, I find myself somewhat envious of these man spaces, er, basements, er, lower levels that are fully finished out. But alas, we don’t do basement spaces here in SE Texas because of the soil quality or some such reason.

Anyway, my shop is in my garage. It too is my man space but unforunately I find my wife frequently “trespassing” in my one and only space in the entire house. And there’s no door, or wall, or any restraining feature, that I can use to minimize either my wife or my little 2-year-old’s presence out there, save for the door leading inside the house.

I’ve built a custom workbench that follows an L shape around two perpendicular walls. There is an additional bench jutting out from that where I stash a variety of items - a tool box full of paints and various tools, and oh, my stash of kits.

I’m starting to consider replacing a set of temporary shelving above the bench with a more permanent structure complete with better lighting that what I currently have. And the pictures don’t show it but I have a small LCD TV complete with DVD and satellite receiver which allows for viewing of various historical shows on the Military channel (I might have included the History Channel, but most of what they show these days hardly qualifies as “history” IMO) or college football games.

Public Storage currently has mine[sigh]

Now that the kids are GONE, I have been permitted to come out of the damp basement and take over one of the spare bedrooms. Have a refurbished screen door on the room to aid in air circulation yet keep out the four legged members of the family. Has a hook and eye at the top on the outside to keep the grandkids at bay. My little piece of heaven.

These threads are such fun!

Frankie I’ve seen the outside of your home…be honest…you got a shovel, dug the ground out beneath, poured the concrete and now your ‘shop’ is twice the size of the dwelling above! (What did you do with the dirt?) I know you and Katie are out of town so I’m safe until Monday![(-D]

For all others…any space is a good space! Remember the folks that model on the coffee table or on a board in their lap! That’s dedication too!

(But if it’s all there was…we could set up a shelf in a 3x2 closet!)

Nam- We haven’t left yet, so you’re fair game!!! [:-,]

LOL, the dirt? I used it to bury the last person who asked what I did with the dirt. [X-)] J/K [(-D]

I admire those who have smaller modeling spaces and still turn out such gorgeous work. My hat’s off to you folks! [bow]

OOPS![X-)]

I’m a single guy with a tiny apartment, so my workspace is an old roll-top desk in a corner of the living room. I have a small paint booth that I made, set on a card table next to the bench (not in the picture). Lots of space in the desk to store extra paint, tools, kits in progress, etc.

Kevin

Mine used to be in the living room but stuff keep getting knocked off the table and broken so I moved into the kitchen

I too once used more than have of my garage as my workshop…barely enough room to get one car inside…in fact I converted it from a 2 1/2 car with a wide single door to a single bay single door…one narrow stall for the vehicle, the rest was workshop.

But you guys just getting started, especially the ones still living at home…here is my humble first workbench when I was a teen.
