Solution - Just open the wife’s closet, and ask why she has so many pairs of shoes.
I’d bet that for most women, there are shoes in there they bought and never even wear!
I am lucky - my girlfriend is totally supportive of my hobby. She actually wanted to go to an IPMS competition to see what it was all about!
I’ve got 60+ kits now in my stash, with only 1 multiple. But the thing is, I get great joy out of buying them as well as building them.
When I want to purchase a mdoel, I read up on it, check what decals there are for it, see what aftermarket stuff is out there, check the builds and reviews of it, the history of the type, etc… before I even buy it. I figure I get a good 2 weeks of entertainment out of a model before I even have the box in my hand.
Then I look for a good deal on the model. I tend to shop on eBay for smoking deals so I get a thrill from that, too.
Like most things, its all good, in moderation. But I think a lot of the guys with 2000, 3000, or more kits are probably, on some level, hoarders. Hoarding is a pretty common - and usually benign - behavior as far as clinical psychological problems go.
A lot of people hide behind acquiring stuff for their hobby as a cover for their hoarding tendencies. If you call 2000 kits your ‘STASH’, you are a modeler many envy. Call it your ‘HOARD’ and suddenly, you need to get help. Its the difference between your wife having 30 pair of shoes (OK) and 3000 (think Imelda Marcos)… ![]()
So I don’t get the guys with 2000+ kits, with many, many multiples. That, to me, is hoarding behavior.
I pretty much have all the kits I wanted to buy now, so I have toned down my acquistions a good bit lately. Mostly, I surf eBay, and only buy if I can get an extra super-hot deal on something.
