What's your favorite kit of all time?

This may start a flame war, but I’m curious. From your point of view, what’s the best kit you’ve ever picked up and assembled? I’m asking from the point of view of kit quality itself (fit, accuracy, detail, options etc) not the finished product that you yourself have accomplished. I’ve seen people on here create museum quality beauties from some flat out horrible kits and i’m not that kind of modeler  The “sweet spot” for me is larger scale 1/48 (1/32 is ideal) and above with a very good fit (Tamiya takes me to my happy place), and good accurate details. I’m currently building a Tamiya 1/48 F-4U and it falls together so easily it makes me giddy. On the other hand i’m also building the infamous Dragon 1/32 P-51. Nice overall fit (so far) but some glaring deficiencies in detail. Anyway, would love to hear you sound off. And photos would be great! Maybe this will help some of us pick our next project

For me, it would be a tie between the Tamiya P-47D T’bolts & the Accurate Miniatures TBF/M Avengers. Both are excellent examples of state of the art kits.

Regards, Rick

I cannot dissagree with Rick. Those 2 kits are on the top. I would only add that the AM SBD kits are also excellent.

Well, its an oldie, and I wish another company would release it with upgrades, but I my favorite has to be the 1/48 scale Tamiya Lancaster B III. Not a perfect kit, but very good and one of the only big lancaster kits out there…

The AM B-25, SBD-3 and the Avenger are my favs so far.

Andy

Mine would be a tie between the 1/48 Tamiya Spitfire and the Corsair.

My most enjoyable build in the last couple of years was the Accurate Minatures P-51A. Good detail great fix nice panel lines and she went together without a hitch. I have not had that happen in a while mostly because I tend to build limited run kits alot like Classic Airframes and MPM. They are also nice but do take alot more work to asemble. I enjoyed the Mustang build so much I went a little overboard on the weathering! I guess I did not want it to end.

The Hasegawa/ Revell reboxed 1/32nd scale ME109’s & FW190’s get my vote. Thought that they are very good in all areas.

Favourite Kit of all time? Only one contender Mongram 1/48 TBD-1 Devastator, closely followed by ESCI 1/48 Henschel HS-123. I have a real soft spot for Monogram 1/48’s during the 70’s/80’s they set the standard for detail.

The Monogram 1/48 F-4J Mig Killer " Showtime 100", is my all time favorite kit! I never tire of building it. While it is a challenge to build and will certainly test a modelers skills it still ranks as No.1 with me.

I built an Accurate Miniatures P-51 kit around 1995. At that time, it was the highest quality aircraft model I had ever built and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

But one kit that will always have a spot in my heart is the old Monogram TBF Avenger. I built it as a kid and loved the folding wings, retractable landing gear and torpedo dropping action. I know it is more of a toy than a model by today’s standards, but I have fond memories of that one.

I’ve been building models most of my life, and I’ve built probably all levels of quality at one time or another. I did take some time away from the hobby during high school and college, but once I got my life on track, I re-discovered the hobby and found that kit quality had improved dramatically from when I left in the early '80s.

I’ve done some real fine Tamiya, Hasegawa and Accurate Miniatures kits, but for me my favorite comes down to childhood memories - Monogram kits from the '70s. I’ve re-built most of them since rejoining the hobby, and my favorite would be the 1/48 P-40B and the 1/48 B-17G. There was always a decent level of detail in these kits, and I always loved the movable features that most of these kits had. Loved the folding wings of the US Navy fighters and the retractable undercarriage that most of the se kits had.

I am going to go with any AM kits. The p 51s and TBM avengers are particular favorites. Also the Tamiya Swordfish goes together very well for a biplane and has great detail.

From a nostalgia standpoint, it would be the Monogram HU-16 Albatross from the late '50s, but from a quality/results standpoint, it is the Acc Min P-51A I just finished for the Secret Santa Group build, followed bay all my iother Acc Min kits!

A plesant surprise for me was the Pro Modeller F-86 Dog Sabre. Great fit and good detail OOB.

When I was first getting my feet wet in plastic modeling, there were 3 kits that provided me the ultimate in enjoyment in both construction and display. Being as long ago as they were, I do not recall the manufacturer, but they were all of dinosaur skeletons, a T-rex, a Brontosaurus, and a Stegosaurus. Regardless of the state of the art in today’s tooling processes, I have yet to build a kit that captures the exhuberance I felt in building and displaying those three kits. If I ever saw one of them again, I’d snatch it up in a heartbeat, regardless of cost. Some things you just cannot put a price tag on.

While I really like all of the new technology kits, recessed panel lines, crisp details, improved accuracy, etc., I have two memorable favorites. First there is the (old) Revell 1/48th F-102 Delta Dagger. It had features like landing gear that retracted when you lowered the canopy, a scale jet engine, and the kit included a tow tractor and engine cart. Second is also toy like, but well done, and that is the visible (clear) 1/32nd scale Mustang by Monogram. This kit has been re-released several times in the last 5 or so years. I wish the F-102 kit would be re-released, but I have not seen it for over 30 years. Anyone know if the molds were destroyed?

Any of the three Tamiya 1/48 Spitfires woukd get my vote. Superb fit and detail.

Darren.

Soulcrusher, the kit looks great! I wouldn’t say you went overboard on weathering. To me it looks like a front-line bird and reminds me of all the historical wartime photos i’ve looked through. Great work! I’ve bever build the “A” model P-51. Might have to look into that

Aggieman, I’ve got a soft spot for that B-17G as well. I build it once. About 18 years ago. I want to do it again, but this time I’m thinking of going with a BMF finish. On a bird that size It will probably take me a couple weeks to do the foil alone, but when that baby is done it will be an eye-catcher!
