What's the difference between these two planes?

(sorry but you knew someone was going to do it so I figured let’s get it out of the way)

On a serious note… as if it were possible… ask this in the Kinights of the Sky GB… lots of WWI types there.

The most significant difference is in the fuselage, which is oval in the DV, compared to roundishly-rectangular in the DIII. There are other detail differences, such as the shape of the triangular tailskid fillet, which has a “vertical side” at the rear on the DIII, and a “raked side” on the DV. The pilot would also have been grateful for the movement of the radiator, which was on the upper wing centreline of the DIII, and offset to starboard on the DV (so that, if punctured, boiling water would not stream over the pilot).
