I’ve never understood why it was moved to the rear. I just know it still holds the same roles. I’m just typing what I’m reading these days.
From what I remember, the /A was added to sell congress on the multi role aspects of the plane when it was under scrutiny for cost. Then when some of that scrutiny passed, they dropped the /A and tacked one on the end to signify the variant.
