Janus:
Use a needle threader to help with the rigging. I used several on the Cutty Sark and it sure reduced eye strain.
Janus,
Drop me a line I have a few tips on the USS Constitution, I just picked up the USS United (Sister ship) and the revell Thermoplae. The Big C, is a above average kit but there are some short cuts you need to know about.

Hi…I’m currently working on Revell’s USS Lionfish. I wasn’t too pleased with the level of detai, so I bought a photo-etch set made specifically for it, as well as a new conning tower. I still didn’t like the way it was going to come out, so I’ve used CorelDraw 8 to do some vector graphic *.cdr file, which I had made into 8 1/2" x 11" negatives (fairly cheap: $8.00 each!). I purchased a photoetching set from Datac Inc. This week-end, I’ll be stinking up the house with smelly chemicals. . If, and I repeat IF this works, I’ll have a new set of lmber holes for the sides of th superstucture, as well as the bow plane recesses, new foreward & aft torpedo tube exterior doors, hatches etc. The only problem I forsee now is that I’ll have to make a new deck, as well as the upper part of the pressure hull…this will be visible through the gaps in the decking. Maybe a new deck gun…hmmmm
Why German armor of course! Next ship project will be 1:350 'Arizona Just ordered (PRE-ORDER) the new Trumpeter 1:350 Essex. Look forward to their release of the Lexington/Saratoga kits and the Nimitz later this year.
Just finished the old Nichimo Kagero in 1/200, basic kit, not much detail…took me about 300 hours, and I’ve added about 1500 new parts to her…I should have just scratchbuilt her and saved my self the headache.
There will be a full build-up article on Modelwarships.com early next week.

I’m scratch building a wooden model of a Chesapeake Bay skipjack, an oyster dredge boat. It’s based on the Model Shipways plans of the Willie L. Bennett, 3/8" to the foot, backdated a bit to the early 1900’s (WLB is circa 1930’s). The deck will be mostly unplanked to show the interior and deck framing and the aft cabin is partially roofed over to show a detailed interior. I’ve built the anchor windlass and am in the process of doing the winch drums and mechanism for the oyster dredges. While the model is wood, the mechanical bits are made up from left over plastic bits and pieces from the spares boxes and Evergreen plastic stock (great stuff, this!). I’m about 2 months into it and I am trying to finish it for a ship model club conference in early May.
I snagged up a revell germany 1/400 Typhoonclass last summer.looks like a reissue of the old “red oktober” kit.I’ll get started while working on my Sherman and su-122,as i am begining to think that it might be a pleasent diversion from the armor side of the house.Furthermore,I need inspiration to get back into the “Sub Command” campaign game I started about the time I got the kit(THAT p.c game is a challenge!).
i just finished the hms tiger and the richelieu.im in the process of building the graf zeppelin then move onto a pbr mk 2.my father served on the pbr mk1, so it will be a small task to transform the mk2 into a mk1.im up to 13 ships sitting waiting to be built.im looking to pass my dads record of 134 ships…im only at 40 or so…have fun!!
I am building 2 makes of the HMS Hood. 1/400 Lindberg and a 1/600 Airfix. This is my first model project since I was a kid. The Lindberg has very little detail. I have drilled portholes, doorways and some photo etched details. The Airfix is much more detailed. Next comes painting. I will practice on the Lindberg first and hopefully do better on the Airfix.
Mirage’s Hinddensse patrol boat in the US Navy markings. Currently looking for 1/400 PE railing for the kit.
I have just completed thr Revell 1/72 scale Schnellboot. What a great kit ! I added the WEM photoetch set.
Currently building the Airfix E-boat. Not nearly as nice as the Revell piece.
At this moment i,m building Trumpeter 1:350 CV8 Hornet, and it is number 6
nº 1 1:350 Tirpitz
nº2 1:350 New Jersey
nº3 1:350 Yamato
nº4 1:350 King Goerge V
nº5 1:350 Sagres ( Portuguese navy training ship)
nº6 1:350 Hornet ( still at work ing on it )
And I´m waiting for ICM 1:350 HOOD and the japanes H.Cruiser Takao as many others 1:350 WWII warships.
I´m currently building ( scratch build) a Dutch Navy Destroyer of the 'Friesland"-classe (1956-1972)
The scale is 1:50 This ship will be 232 cm. long!!
I need some information of a 40mm (L70) Bofors, drawings,foto’s etc.
Happy modeling,
Greetings, Bart. (Netherlands)
Trying a hand at my first ship: 1/350 Lindbergh Tirpitz. priority is a figure diorama i’m finishing though.
Right now I am producing 1:48 plans on CAD for a Flower Class corvette. HMCS Chicoutimi, my father-in-laws’ ship. Construction is styrene and prototypical because in that scale I want to leave the hatches open and model parts of the interior. Been at it for about 6 months now and the ship is framed from stem to the engine room. Estimate another 2 years or so.
Tip:
When doing things like this on CAD, print the patterns onto peelable label sheets, then just transfer the sheet to your material and cut away. Just make sure to use the peelable type because the other kind sticks like @!#$ to a blanket.
My cousin is aboard the USS Lake Erie. Since there isn’t a model available, I’ve been updating Dragon’s USS Mobile Bay. Not a whole lot of conversion, but enough to keep me double-checking my references!
Currently repairing the INS Alfredo Orinai and HIJMS Tachikaze both combat warships in 1/72nd.
Converting the Captain’s Launch from the FNS Surcouf to remote control after taking the guts out of a cheap remote control mouse ( a bit char with a mouse on top) also in 1/72nd.
A Kami Class amphibious Japanese tank to be placed on a combat Japanese LST being constructed by a fellow combatant.
The FNS Surcouf, also in 1/72nd.
Is that it? I think so, way too many projects.[xx(]
Getting closer every day to finishing Banner’s 1/350 Arizona.[:)] But today is the 61st anniversary of the Doolittle Raid on Tokyo - what better way to honor it than to start on the Trumpeter Hornet kit?[:D]
But I’ve promised myself not to start ANOTHER kit until I’ve finished this one [:(]
B. LeCren;
Quite the adventure huh? I posted earlier in this thread that I was doing a 1/32 Schnellboot on CAD and I am now done with the hull lines. started the deck structures and equipment.
BTW that’s a good tip.
Derek,
Where did you get the plans that you are placing on CAD for your Schnellboot?
I have a 1/72nd for R/C combat and am working on the Revell S-100. I would love a set of hull plans for an S 38 Class or above.
