Whats cookin

Not only do we have some excellent modelers here but some geat chefs too!
You are killing me!! Mmm lets see.. Both sets of my grandparents came from Poland and immigrated to the US around 1903/04.
So growing up, both my Baci and my mom were always in the kitchen cooking and baking.
From traditional Polish dishes to Italian and American.
I am one of three siblings, having two older sisters.
So both my sisters were shown/taught how to cook/bake while I was shown how to work with my hands from yard work, plumbing to working on cars from my Dziadj and my dad.
BUT.. Since I was the youngest of the three, my Baci would show me how to cook a bit but she concentrated on baking.
My wife loves to cook as well, so of course she has a lot of pics of her food lol
For me, it’s models BUT…

Here’s my home made apple pie using my moms crust..
I have disc/nerve damage so the pie itself is not as pretty as it could be but OMG, it’s delicious..

Here’s a cake that my Baci made when my mom and her siblings were growing up. Its called Wacky cake and yes even though there are a lot of recipes out there, this is the original.
My mom has her moms hand written recipe framed and the date on it is, September 1951 or 52.. You’d think Id know? Lol
This cake is very simple to make and man, is it ever good! My kids love it

As for my wife, she too is an amazing cook so that’s why she’ll do the cooking and I’ll do the baking.
She is half Polish and half a German so yeah, good food and she cooks for an army!
Summer weekends we’ll have family and neighbors over.
When she cooks, she cooks to her own beat! Here is her ribs that start on the grill then went to the smoker..
HOLY!! Delicious and falls right off the bone!

I’m hungry now…

Mike

Very cool - a baker! Those pies look good - and what a match you and your wife.

We are on a mostly fixed income, so we dont eat fancy.
Plus, my wife is Dominican, and “fancy” eatin’ isn’t her cultural norm. While I was raised by a chef and a professional baker, we keep it simple.
Thus, you can bet todays menu will probably include these staples…

Fruit
Rice and beans
Cabbage salad
Maybe half an avocado
Fried eggs
A bit of inexpensive meat (or not)

Bonus - we were given some tamales at church last night, so those will be fit in to todays table fare.

Love simple foods. Grew up Irish/English then married a Brazilian girl. Boiled meats & cabage or rice and beans make me happy

Ditto…and theres much to be said for simplicity. Its a manner of living that pays subtle benefits.
Thanks for your reply

Got to agree with that! There are some amazing foods being pictured in this thread.
Maybe instead of having model contests, we should just have food conventions/contests instead.

I got an idea… Hey FSM, how about making a cookbook for modelers?
It could be called, “What’s cookin with FSM”? I get credit/naming fee if you use the name lol

Seriously, I’d toss in my Wacky cake recipe.

Mike

IPMS Judge #1: The cake is very moist. Nice texture.
IPMS Judge #2: Yeah, but the frosting on top has no weathering (Not decorated).
IPMS Judge #3: Still, it’s very delicious. We’ll give him 2nd Place.

We’re thinking alike WhatIfRebel! I made a huge kettle on Thursday night, with the weather forecast in mind, and so it’s leftover chili tonight./

FSM in the past would have “Annuals” like Great Scale Modeling. We should get them to compile all of our favorite recipes into a FSM "Modelers Recipes"Edition.

How about a FSM calendar, with monthly photos of members’ models, plus a little inset pic and a recipe from the builder?

I didn’t get my Aloha Patio calendar this year, so I’m wanting a food recipe one for the kitchen!

That looks really scrumptious, with the added bonus (for me at least) of being able to heat my home via gaseous expulsion after consuming it. (cabbage gets me every time  ).

My take on Bulgogi & Kimchi

College student here so def not as skillfully presented or delicious looking as all y’alls food, but these are the things I’m super proud I made this week! Pineapple/greek seasoned chicken with rice and a salad and a double cheeseburger with a sunny side up egg!

let me know if you guys have any budget recipes!

My go to meal preps for the week, a bunch of bbq’d chicken thighs, then I just cook two cups or rice, two cups of dried black beans, mix the rice an beans together with a sautéd onion and some Cajun seasoning. You got lots of options, wraps, burritos, bowls, etc. idk I’m a pretty basic person though lol.
