WhatIfRebel, your flight deck work turned out amazing! This build is going to look awesome when it’s completed.
Working on the burned out T-72…here are the reference pics I’m using and the latest rust shade on the model.
That rust sure looks rusty, Jeeves
What product are you using for that?
Heya Edwin…
I’m using just paint so far from the Lifecolor Dust and Rust set. Pigments will be coming up soon…
A very nice rust effect. Great reference photo. Can’t wait for you to put the pigment on it.
After gluing down the island superstructure to the flight deck of my carrier last night, I had a major problem of a gap between the bottom of the starboard side of the island superstructure and the surface of the flight deck. You can see it in the first picture below. No matter what I did when building the island superstructure in the past, I wasn’t able to successfully correct this issue.
So my options are to either add a large or skinnier piece of styrene strip to the side of the superstructure to cover up the gap as shown in the 2nd and 3rd pics below. It’s the only solution I can think of.
Which looks better? A wider piece or a skinnier piece of styrene strip? And then after adding either one and painting it grey, Is there anything else I can do to the starboard side to “detail” that piece of strip or anywhere else? Any suggestions?
Here’s a suggestion. I’ve used Mr.Hobby white putty. Here’s how you can use it without having to sand it. 1.Put tape on both sides of the gap. (Really close to it). 2. Apply the putty to the gap with a toothpick. 3. Take a Q-tip, wet it with some saliva. Roll it between your fingers to make the cotton tighter around the tip. Wipe the excess putty away, then remove the tape.
I did some dry brushing on my “tiny” Bandai Star Wars ships and used a paint marker to highlight some panels on the Millennium Falcon & the Rebel Blockade Runner.
Like Chris stated above, you’ll basically be caulking that seam and, some paint should blend it in.
Steve
I agree with everything Cbowling said and I’d add that our local Hobby Town carries really small Tamiya "Q-Tips"swabs that are molded to a fine tip that make work well too.
The turret on the burned out T-72 is rather skull like. Makes the appearance of it even more grim. Your work is fantastic.
Jeeves, that looks fantastic and so realistic. Nothing beats “rusty & crusty!”
The Fang is moving along - pretty good fit overall.
Today I finished the first stage of my Zoukei-Mura F-4C WWIV. I started the project by completing the external stores, rather than waiting until the end when I have run out of enthusiasm.
Center line tank, underwing tanks, inboard pylons with adaptors for the Shrikes, AN.ALQ-87, AIM-9s and AGM-45s.
All built, filled, sanded, primed, painted, decaled, coated with clear coat. All that remains is weathering and final clear coat - matte or satin finish.
Great looking bits! Makes a big difference getting the little stuff right.
There may have been another DC, but it would’ve been Air Force or Air National Guard. 0497 was the only Navy DC-130A in service. We may very well have flown into AAJ AB, we did a bit of bouncing around. After the drone-services were no longer needed, we became a ‘quiet’ cargo-asset; we weren’t attached to nor were we controlled/scheduled by MAC, so we could simply ‘load-n-go’.
Keavdog - little bits do add up to improve the final product. They can also be very frustrating.
Oldretiredengineer, the guys on the “Model Geeks” podcast recommend doing the same thing. Seems like putting off that small “piddly” stuff often leads to burnout at the end of a build. BTW your ordinance looks great.
The stealthy angled island superstructure got put on my what if fantasy future carrier a few days ago. I know it probably looks way too big to be put on the carrier, but the parts I used were all I had to work with. Used superstructure parts from 1/350 scale Freedom and Independence class LCS ships plus the enclosed sensor masts from a 1/350 scale San Antonio class LPD-17 amphibious ship. The back end of the island superstructure has a small “garage” to it for flight deck tractors or other equipment. The whole carrier is only 90% done so far. Still have more details to put on it. Won’t be finished till later this Fall. All the aircraft have been painted, but just have to finish decaling and detailing them. Those won’t be finished till later in the Fall as well.
