I put a coat of Future on and it turned everything dark. Did I just not have the base color thick enough, or the Future too thick?

Don’t worry, when it dries and you put a flat coat on, it should go back to normal.
Yeah don’t worry about the colr change it should turn out alright in the end. I think it’s because of a trick of the light when you glossed it. I’ve seen it happen before to some of my stuff and it turned back ok after spraying flat again.
When you gloss coat a previously matte surface, it begins to reflect light more uniformly and efficiently, giving it a “wet” look. Therefore less light “remains” on the model surface. With a matte surface with microscopic pebbled surface, light gets diffused in all directions, therefore appearing brighter. Your follow up flat coat will re-introduce the microscopic pebbling and return a somewhat brighter appearnce.
