What to thin Putty with?

Hi all, this is going to sound daft but what do you use to smooth Tamiya and Revell putty with? I think i read somewhere about using a q-tip dipped in nail polish remover? Was that right?

Any help would be appreciated [tup]

Acetone. It’s a key ingredient in nail polish remover. FWIW, I use laquer thinner to “thin” putty.
