What should my next Scratchbuild be?

Yes, yes, I know I’m knees-deep in projects right now, including my scratchbuilt R-plane the SSW R.VIII. This doesn’t mean that I can’t look forward to potential future projects. There are two that I’ve been contemplating, and just thought I could get some academic feedback from the community.

First up, continuing with the “R-Plane motif”, the… “interesting” Linke-Hofmann R.I.

(Credit given to www.airwar.ru)

Centrally-mounted biplane (four engines inside), experimental “whale” fuselage for increased performance (also seen on the much smaller DFT T.28 “Floh”, a kit which is coming for me in the mail as we speak), and WWI “stealth” technology- transparent cellon. Problem was, the R.I didn’t fly too well, and the cellon reflected so much sunlight that it actually made the plane MORE visible. Could make for interesting internal detailing, or simply a frustrating exercise in gluing clear plastic.

Second, a plane I’m sure everyone knows, a Caproni Ca.4 series Triplane.

(Thanks, wikipedia.)

Not much interesting backstory. Save that it’s kinda the structural opposite of the R.I- Spindly and spread out as opposed to “solid” and compact. I saw a 1/144 scratchbuild of the Ca.42, and it was quite impressive. A 1/72 example I’m assuming even more so. Only problem could be a definite excess of rigging.

I’m very open to both right now. In fact, I will probably end up building both eventually anyway. I’m just wondering what y’all would like to see, keeping in mind I probably won’t start either for a long time.

Mike,

Not to gloss over your two proposed builds, but I would love to see you have a crack at a Tupolev ANT-20 Maxim Gorky. I know you love those big multi-engined mutha’s, and, with your skills, you could pull it off I’m sure. Never seen a model of one, apart from a wooden carved attempt that looked, well, ordinary. Give it some thought ?

(Sigh) [:D]

Yes, I’ve given an ANT-20 some thought. Heck, even more than that- I’d like to finish the family up, with a TB-1, TB-3 (got that), TB-4, ANT-20, and ANT-26. Comprehensive plans exist of the Maxim Gorky, and the fuselage would be a rather simple matter of skinning a balsa core with corrugated sheet styrene. The wings could be built up in a similar manner to ICM’s TB-3, with spars, ribs, and more corrugated plastic. Nacelles might be a bit hariy, but thanks to resin molding technology, I’d only need to make one good one.

Have I given it some thought? Yeah. The reason I didn’t put it here is two-fold.

-As you said, it would be a HUGE project. Pretty much a Li-Ho R.I and a Ca.42 combined.

-I had a feeling that, if I put it up as a choice, EVERYONE would pick that one (and I don’t blame them!) [:D]

So yeah, I’ve had plans for a Maxim Gorky of my own for a while. It’s just question of when I want to do it.

I’ll give it some thought. [;)]

(Yay) You 'da man !

Well if you don’t wanna do the Gorki, how about the Witteman Lewis Barling XNBL-1. I’ll even send you a nice set of plans. Or the Tarrant Tabor?
