I have returned to modelling after 18 years away and am almost done with the Tamiya M41 Walker Bulldog. I can’t decide what to build next. Any ideas of another kit to help “relearn” this hobby?
What is your general interest? WW2, Nam, Modern? German, American, British/commonwealth, Russian? We will probably be able to help you into something more fitting with these answers. [Y]

Excellent. In that case I would suggest the Tamiya 1/35 Cromwell. It goes together very nicely, decent detail, and a good price. I have one currently on hold (waiting for aftermarket parts…typical [:D] ) and it went together very well. I would suggest the add on of the tamiya grill set for it, and if you don’t like vinyl tracks then Hobby Boss sells a decent indy track set (I opted for both.)

No, you haven’t really returned to the hobby until you don’t have to ask “What model should I buy for my next build?”, because when you REALLY return to the hobby your stash will easily last longer than your natural life will allow you to build it. To relearn the hobby is to buy kits you know deep inside you will never build. Never…
A good choice. I just finished mine except for the figure. Went together well. The tracks were fine for me, they even glued down effortlessly with a little CA.
Any of the Newer Tamiya kits: Wespe, Panzer III, Marder III, Tiger, Panther G, King Tiger should be an easy affair. Also Trumpeter’s KV series are recommended.

I agree about Tamiya’s new kits. Don’t forget about Tamiya’s new Stug III Ausf. B… bought it at Hobby Lobby using 40% coupon for $30. It came with few PE and an aluminum barrel. It was a pleasure & fun build and it is in its painting stage now.
Be careful… just like Manny said, two years ago I returned to the hobby after 20 years of absence and I am trying to figure out how in the world I end up with 50+ kits in my stock. Addictive…
I saw the Stug at Hobby Lobby yesterday on clearence for $25 so I better get it. Unfortunately our local hobby shop here in Jefferson City, MO, closed after Christmas.

I sold off my stash at a yard sale 10 years ago after getting married, so I better get with it and start buying kits.

I too was going to suggest the Cromwell. It’s a lovely kit and a simple build BUT it has lots of potential for trying out weathering techniques and there is a great Commander figure (supplied) to boot-even I managed a half decent job on him and my figures are, erm, not the best (yet)!
As previously said on this thread, if you want a German WWII build then a StuG A or B would be a good choice.
Here is my Cromwell. It’s one of my older builds so it’s not the best but it’s a beautiful tank…

I will definitely agree with the Cromwell, or the Centaur. Both are excellent kits that practically build themselves. Just be sure to read the directions throughly about little things like drilling certain openings in the armor and version choices. These kits build so easily you can get ahead of yourself. Tamiya’s Churchill is also a nice build for the novice as well. Besides, there is never enough British armor on here…[8-|]

Congrats! Was it a Tamiya kit? If so, you will find that kit very easy and enjoyable to build. I just finished mine… a tip for you… don’t glue the range finder and the scopes until you are done painting! Mine broke when it was being moved around alot during the painting stage. You will love the wheels with its springs… it was my favorite part. Good luck!
Tamiya’s are a great starter kit. Helps hone the skills and if you make a booboo, oh well extensive weathering!

Thanks for the tip deafpanzer. This Tamiya kit is by far better them the Tamiya M41 I just got done with. So much more info on this kit online and in this forum. Looks like my summer is planned out building and researching.
Jeff City is the same as usually except for a lot of the state working losing their jobs. The local hobby shop closed after 6-8 years in business, but we have one in Taos, but they are mainly trains and R/C.
