What scale track?

If I were to add a section of railroad track to a diorama featuring 1/35 scale armor, what scale track comes the closest to matching the scale of the model?

I know it’s not HO which is 1/87. N-line? which is even smaller. Sorry, not much help.

I suppose it would be best to buy the materials and create my own track, I could make the ties from balsa or basswood, and the hobby shop I frequent has a large selection of metal, I would need to find a scale converter to get the dimensions correct.
I was just throwing the idea around in my head today while I was prowling the hobby shop.

DML has some track sections that are meant to go with their 1/35th German rail cars. You can get them in straight and curved sections. The closest in train scales is either G or O scale, depending on where the track is representing, i.e. different European contries use different gauge (width) track.

Heer are some others from aftermarket companies:

Verlinden (2X) http://www.greatmodels.com/cgi/display.cgi?item_num=vp1128

That should give you some ideas.

Thanks! I may order a couple of sections to keep on hand, or maybe just one that I can use as a reference to construct my own track.

G scale - big range but usually considered to be around 1/22.5
O scale - either 1/48 or 1/45.2

If your making a BIG Dio and the tracks are in the foreground, G scale would actually add more depth to the scene. If the track is in the background O scale would also add depth. Both cases because of tricking the viewer with forced perspective. I’ve seen it on large model railroad layouts and it is very effective.

Another alternative: I think you can get 1/35 track pieces from trumpeter or dragon because they make them for thier Leopolds.

Thanks for the link on scale and the ideas, I don’t think the dio would be too big.

Dragon make the Track and sell it on its own
but are you looking for Eastern front or Western

Captain Caveman has a good point, Russian gage is narrower than European

If you can find it S scale is or was 1/32 scale but I don’t know ifthey even make it any more. Opps telling my age again!! Good luck Stephen

As a model railroader I can tell you that the track width of the real stuff is 4 feet 8 1/2 inches wide. That width comes from the lore of how wide the rut was made by the Roman chariots.

Aah, so much to know, I guess I would have to consider ths if I ever decided to go ahead with it, like I said before, it is just something I was curious about, good to know there are other factors to be considered, I would have guessed all track to be the same.
