What scale are Train Buildings?

I was thinking of doing a diorama, and one of the local hobby shops have a TON of already built (and fairly cheap) train buildings.

Of course, they are in handy scales like HO, H, N and whatnot.

The boxes didn’t give true scale sizes, anyone know?

I was thinking of 1/72 for my 1st diorama.

Z scale is 1/220
N scale is 1/160
HO scale is 1/87
O scale is 1/48
No. 1 scale is 1/32
G scale is 1/22.5

There also live steam trains in 1/16, 1/12 and 1/4 scales.

Some HO buildings can ‘do’ for 1/72-1/76 dioramas. Older houses and buildings, particularly from Europe, would be a good start. People used to be smaller so doors were smaller too. It would not look too strange to combine those buildings with 20th Century armor. I would think more modern buildings would be a no-go.

The alternative is to make your own. You can use railway hobby shop stuff, such as plastic sheets of ‘corrugated metal’, of ‘slates’, trees, lamp posts, fences,… I use a product called foam board to create walls. The foam is sandwished between 2 thick sheets of paper. Once you remove the papers, you can ‘engrave’ the foam with a toothpick or else. Then paint with acrylics.

Cool-

Thanks for the scales, I knew about the foam board (used to build some when I worked for a design firm) but I didn’t know about how to paint them.

There is a rare and hard to find “S” scale in railroading that is 1/72 scale.

Claymore has it down.
