What MM color is used for the top coat of the F4F-3 Wildcat

I want to know if someone can help me with what color is needed for the top of the Wildcat I’m currently building. Either MM or Tamiya. Thank you in advance.

Your friend, Toshi

Hi Toshi,

I suppose the appropriate question in response would be what year? I assume that their paint schemes changed thought the war like every other plane.

Toshi, the F4F-3 was at the end of it’s use in August 1942, of course relegated to the Marines. The colors were Blue Gray over Light Gray.

Blue Gray never had an ANA number, the Army-Navy Aeronautical system. Light Gray was ANA 602 at that time.

My own preference would be MM Navy Blue Gray, their 205545, and MM Flat Gull Gray, their 1730. Others probably have better suggestions, it’s hard to be sure on this one.

For the cowl ring I would use Insignia Red.

Toshi, IMO there’s no way you could overdo the weathering on this aircraft. I don’t know it’s s/n, in fact there’s not a lot I can find on it. Galer was the squadron commander, he rec’d the CMOH, and no doubt spent a great amount of time up.

Its a good bet that little -3 had a bunch of hours prior.

Henderson Field was a dirty, dusty place under constant attack.

So have at it with dirt, rain streaks, sun fading and leaky systems.

The F4F-3 saw three paint schemes: the pre war yellow wings, the “neutrality patrol” overall light gray, and the early war blue gray over light gray. Model Master makes all the proper colors in their line. With Tamiya paints, you have to do some mixing.

Thank you sir. That is the answer I’m looking for.

Thank you for the color codes.

Now the start of the engine assembly.

SORRY, WRONG POST TO WRONG THREAD!!!
