What is your favorite scale for ship/ boat building?

I never build boats, except for my D-day landing LCT, so I guess 1/125 gets my vote…[:)]

I build mostly sailing ships, these of which the scales vary. I also like 1/700 and 1/350 when I’m in the mood.

I prefer 1/350. Some subjects are only available in smaller scales which really hacks me off. But since 350 is becoming so popular more and more will be released in the future. I hope. I don’t have the fingers for 1/700. The eyes are fine but the clubs at the ends of my hands tend to turn the smaller pieces into unknown little blobs of broken plastic.

Hope to built a 1/1 Nimitz class one day…lol
Honestly due to space 1/700…

I like building in 1:48. Of course this means I also build smaller ships, and I usually scratch them out because I am drawn to the off beat subjects. Most of my ships come in between 4 and 6 feet long. I don’t find the size a problem because it takes me years to do one vessel so they don’t add up too fast!

350th for the larger ships but 72nd for the smaller patrol boats and the like. However the 72nd U-boat is definately on the “to purchase” list

i quite agree with nicholma: I already ordered the 1/72 u-boat. it should be here in a few days.
the waiting is killing me!!![sigh]

I am trying to keep my collection mostly the same scale so 1/72 for now to match the planes, tanks and sci-fi. Course that does limit my subjects but since I prefer patrol craft, brown water navy and landing craft I am ok for most. The U-boat and the Flower Class Corvette are on my want list and I am considering a scratchbuilt USS Monitor (waterline) if I ever find a decent set of plans.

My primary interest is wooden sailing ships, particularly the smaller ships like brigs, schooners, topsail schooners. In younger days 1/8" to the foot was no problem. Fairly large size models of clipper ships, etc. But as the glims get older, I find 3/16" and 1/4" to be much easier to work with. Plus, I can build a highly detailed large model of a small or medium sized ship. And super detailing is fun.
