What is this on the M1A1?

Hello all,

I have Dragon’s M1A1-HA Abrams and Eduard’s Photoetch set. The photoetch set includes this piece of equipment but I have no idea what it is. It’s circled in red in the picture. I’m guessing it’s either addition smoke grenades (doubtful) or simulator rounds for training. Does anyone know?

Thanks,

Jesse

That is a Hoffman device, basically used to simulate the main gun blast during maneuver exercises.

Thanks Rob. I figured that’s what it was. I’ve only seen them mounted over the barrel. Do Abrams tanks really mount them on the side like that?

Jesse

I think it is in the wrong place too. I have seen the newer MGSS (Main Gun Simulation System) which is/has replaced the Hoffman, mounted on the side of the turret though. Maybe they are confused with the MGSS.

I am also making M1 A2 Abrams

seems to be coming out nicely. Is that DML kit? By the way, did you install APU on a back of the tank? I thought APUs are not used on M1A2s (but I could be wrong, just like many other times

Looks like the Italeri kit. You’re right about the hull-mount APU - they’re not used on the M1A2’s.

They were mounted on the bore evacuator (fume extractor) with the 105mm and moved to the area forward of the manhole cover where the four bolts are. After the M1A2 came into use, the Hoffman was moved to the side so it would not interfere with the A2’s CITV.

M1A2s use the turret bustle rack APUs. Hull-mounted APUs have not been used since ODS ('90-'91). I also concur that it is the Iatlari kit.
