What is the best way to do turret numbers on zim?

In the past I hand painted the markings over the zim. it looked good with some patience. What other methods work well? Dry transfers, stencils, decals? What are some pro/cons? Thanks, Greg.

id say hand painting and stencils for airbrushing or rattle cans are your best bets. decals and dry transfers will be pains to get into the crevices, they will not be as big as they should look because they have to go over the ridges which scrunches them when viewed straight on, and they have a good chance of just breaking due to the roughness and difficult work to get them to stick to the zim

I used kit decals and a liberal dose of decal solution on a Tamiya Tiger I with a resin replacement turret. The zimm detail was not exceptionally deep, so I soften the decal and kept jabbing at it with a stiff brush. Took a while but it worked. Archer claims the dry transfers work over zimm, but I am not that brave!

I would say dry transfers (ie, Archer) work fairly well, but hand-painting with a steady hand can look great–and actually, that was how it was done on the real tanks in the field, so it seldom appeared as perfect as a transfer/decal.

That being said, I would personally go with transfers…my hand isn’t that steady since the war wound… [;)]

Transfers all the way…IMHO

archer’s are made for zimm. They have flexible ink. Oddly enough, thats how how i make my flags, just burnish it on some foil, cutout the flag and you can crumple it up like crazy…

Tankbuild, thanks for the tip on the flags! Thats a good one

Thanks guys. Greg.

sorry for the off topic, but here are some tips on transfers http://www.archertransfers.com/Instruct.html

On zimmeritt , I like to paint the the larger markings on , like the turret numbers , and the crosses . Unit markings I use decals . I like to practice on some scrap sheet plastic , that I have zimmed .
