What is the best brand paint to use?

So I am just getting back into modeling. Been absent from doing any in over 20 years. With all the new stuff that"s out there I have no idea where to start. So what"s the best paint to use out there. I am also going to get an airbrush kit also. Any tips on the best paint to use with it?

It strongly depends and honestly having some different types is a good thing. For airbrush I recommend using Tamiya paints, only if you have some time of ventilation for particulate. Otherwise ammo atom acrylic is pretty good all round for airbrush and brush. For brush painting any acrylic works well, such as ammo or Vallejo.

The “best” model paint really depends on what type of model you’re building and the painting method (brush, airbrushing) you’re using.

I used to use TAMIYA long ago, but stopped due to the odor, especially after using the spray cans.

If you want accuracy as far as the right shade/color of paint for an aircraft, tank, etc., then Squadron Colors airbrushing paints from Squadron website are perfect.

I now only use Vallejo paints for all my models. Mostly the Vallejo Model Air type. Vallejo has an extensive range of colors. Vallejo Model Color is good for regular brushing. Vallejo Model Air is the main airbrushing line. And then there’s also Vallejo Mecha Color, Vallejo Game Air, and several more Vallejo lines as well.

I use Tamiya and AK-Real mixed with Mr Leveling Thinner for airbrushing,for me the odor is low,I’m not generating clouds of overspray with my AB,especially on most armor and planes.

For handbrushing I do like Vallejo Model Color and Panzer Aces,they also spray nicely using their thinner and flo-improver

I never see anyone mention Squadron Colors and I was unaware of them. I’m going to buy a few bottles and check them out.

IMO, this type of question will have many different responses as there are paint brands. For me, who builds almost exclusively aircraft and airbrushes paints, my first choice is Tamiya. After than Vallejo Air is a very close 2nd and sometimes my first choice. I’ve tried a few other like AK which thins poorly even with their thinner and just blobs on, or if you thin it enough to run smoothly just goes on like colored water.

I’ve got a few brands that I use. Each one generally has a specific use. Tamiya is my main go to. I thin mine with either Tamiya lacquer, or Mr. Leveler. For aircraft; Tamiya, and MRP. MRP can be airbrushed straight from the bottle. (Used for Airbrushing only) Pro; lays down great. Con; Has a strong odor. Because it’s so thin, takes some time to get use to using it. For Auto builds; Tamiya spray can, paint, and clear. Easy to use with great results. For Armor; Tamiya. For Figures; Vallejo Panzer Aces/Model Color.
For anything metallic, Vallejo Metal Color, (No thinning needed, can be used for brush painting. Pro; Great finish, low odor, easy to use. Alclad II Lacquer. (Used for Airbrushing only). Pro; ultra realistic colors, lays down great on a properly prepared surface. Con; Has a very strong odor.
