What is that box below the window?

I’m working on a Korean war vintage F-86 for the group build and I need some help. See that square right below the canopy? What is it? I have reference images that show it copper colors and others, including the instructions, that say it should be the same as the rest of the metal.

I thought it might help to know what it actually is? Anyone know?

Hmmm, never really noticed that before. Here goes one possible explanation, but it’s my opinion with no research done. Some aircraft vent air (possibly heated) directly to the front of the canopy to assist with rain removal and prevent it from icing up. This could possibly be part of the windscreen deing system.

This is what it looks like on the F-14 nose, just ahead of the canopy.

Being as the F-86 is a much earlier design, maybe it’s a different concept to fix the same issue.
