What is Polly Filla Called in the USA?

The author of this article used “Polly Filla” drywall filler to create the concrete of his airfield diorama base. However, when I went to a local hardware store the staff didn’t know what Polly Filla is. This makes me suspect the article was written in the UK or some other country where the product is available.

Any ideas? I got the base started, I need to run to Ace Hardware and get this Polly Filla ASAP.

PolyFilla is nothing more than a vinyl-based spackle. It can come ready to use in tube form or as a powder which is mixed with water to the consistency you require.

I’m sure that it must be avaliable under a wide variety of brand names - just ask for “spackle”, and they’ll show you a whole shelf full of it.

Sheetrock mud is what I use for that… Officially, Joint Compound or Joint Cement… I buy it in 1 quart tubs at Ace Hardware, 'bout 6 bucks…

I use spackle.drwall compound for everything. It’s grea for texturing stuff like rusted metal in small amounts, like you said, it’s great for sidewalks or concrete, and I use it in place of the “Celluclay” so many people swear by, using it to build up shape on my dioramas. It doesn’t crack when dry in my experiences, and is easily sandable. I’ve heard enough good things aobut celluclay though that I may need to give it a try anyways…

Celluclay is excellent ground material, I just prefer sheetrock mud for runways, taxiways, ramps, streets, and sidewalks… Often use both where the terrain is mixed… I also use the mud for stucco over brick buildings and walls that have lost the covering here & there, and for stuccoing over wood and foam structures… It’s great mud as well…

zimmerit over acrylic topcoat?

You askin’ if it would work for Zimmerit? Probably… But not on a smooth surface… It needs a rough surface to grab onto…
