What-If -- Afrika Korps Me-262

Hi all,
I thought I would share some pics of my latest project. It is the Tamiya 1/48th Me-262 A-2a with Kettenkraftrad. I have also used the Eduard PE set for this too which really adds to the kit, especially the cockpit interior.
First of all, to all the history buffs, I know this never happened [:)]
I was looking through some pics and found a paint scheme for JG 27 in Libya 1941. I thought the tiger stripe scheme was excellent. I began thinking that this would look ssooooo cool on an Me-262 [:D] and just couldn’t stop myself
I have made a little progress since these pics. The wings are now attached to the fuselage nice and solid. I am hoping to get to work on it today and hopefully get to the decal stage.
I am attempting to make my own Totenhand decal. I have a good epson ink jet printer but so far I am not very happy with the quality I am getting. I have tried all the different settings for paper, photo paper, different resolutions, draft mode, high photo quality with no luck. It all just looks like little tiny puddles of ink on decal paper and not a nicely printed decal. I am thinking of going to local printing places and do the laser printed route.

Waaayyyy cool-it’s your model, make it pink if you want.

Dan

Oh, groovy! That rocks, guy… I’m especially diggin’ the stripes. This the photo you’re talking about?

I also like your gear well, 'tis probably the nicest I’ve seen on a 262…

Thanks guys, I appreciate the comments.
Trowlfazz - Pink ?? … [:I] maybe not pink [;)] but I had actually thought about using sand gelb as the base color and putting the tiger stripes on top of that [:P] which would probably look great too.
Blackwolf - That is the one [:D]. It is the same plane but not the same pic I saw. Where did you find this great pic?
As you see I didn’t ‘copy’ the scheme but strongly borrowed the from it.

Really nice job! Love that camo. Thanks for sharing!

Wayne,

Good modeling indeed ! Very nice !

Chris

I’m diggin’ it!

As BlackWolf mentioned, the gear well is superbly done. Had to look close to see if it was a ref pic!

That looks awesome! I love the cockpit details, and the paintjob looks fantastic!

I love a what if build, great work

Thad

I’m not a fan of "what ifs’', but the work you’ve done is great. Somewhere, I remember seeing a model of an Me-262 that was done as Marsaille’s Yellow 14 with the RLM 79/78 scheme, also pretty cool.

Regards, Rick

Wonderful what-if. Excellent cockpit and well. The 262’s lines and that paint scheme remind me of a shark. Allen

Brilliant idea! The painting and detailing on your model is fantastic, thanks for sharing,

Darren.

Excellent finish too. Superb detail all around.

Man that is fantastic. I agree, the stripes definately give a shark like appearance.

Interesting. What do you plan to use for sand filters for the engine intakes? Jumo 004s would definately need them.

it is awesome.

great work so far.

Thanks all, again, your comments are most nice and appreciated [:)]
I am really enjoying this kit. All Tamiya kits are nice kits but for some reason this 262 is going together really sweet.

I never thought about or noticed it before, but I like the shark look idea. The overall size and shape of the Me262 with that particular paint scheme really does give that look. Instead of just tiger stripes, now they are tiger shark stipes [^] . Good eyes guys.

Pixilater - I was actually wondering about that myself. A couple of guys over at Armorama had brought up the same thing. I had always known that the airplanes flying in Africa had special filters put on them. I figured that there would also have to be something to protect the jet engines from the sand.

One mentioned that the filters would interfere with the air intake of the jet engines so I should just have a mechanic standing by to put on the front covers.
Another mentioned scratchbuilding some kind of filter.
[%-)]
I have never scratch built anything yet but would love to give it a shot. Something like this probably wouldn’t be all that involved or difficult but I have NO idea what it would look like or how I would make it.
I would love to hear some ideas and concepts and tips on what the filters would look like and how to go about making them. Or should I not use filters and use the mechanic with the cover idea [?]

I am seriously considering making a diorama for this one too. Other than lots of sand I am rather lost on ideas and would love to hear all yours on possible scenarios for the dio.

That’s awesome mate. That scheme looks great on a 262. The cockpit and interiors look great too. Thanks for sharing.

super cool! It makes me wish there was a what-if group build…

[:D]

Thanks pingtang and BigTon.

BigTon - If you are interested in a what-if group build and are into aircraft. I am campaign leader of one going on now at armorama.com. Would be thrilled to have you join up with us [tup] If you head over that way the campaign is called “Double Take”
This Me262 is my project for that campaign.
