What Hinksy got for his 30th Birthday today!

Good evening lads,

Some of you might have known that’s it my 30th Birthday today-I got some pretty cool stuff!

What’s this piece of armour? I think this is in Africa…

My Uncle is the one kneeling down in the background wearing the beret…

My Aunt handed down my Great Uncles WWII service medals to me and the few photos she could find of him-I was really amazed when I saw them! We thought they had been lost ages ago!

Apart from a few quid and other stuff I got my Flakpanzer, Humveee and German tank crew.

I’ll be starting the Flakpanzer tomorrow. I’ve been up the LHS today and (against some advice) I’ve decided to brush paint her using Tamiya acrylics. It’s a small kit with a cammo colour scheme. The owner of the LHS buils 1/48 armour and brush paints usingTamiya acrylics so he gave me a few pointers-if it doesn’t work out so be it.

I asked about a rattlecan of Tamiya paint to do the base coat on the Humvee (desert colour) but apparently due to red tape we cannot get Tamiya sprays anywhere in the EU! I won’t be starting her for a while but boy does she look like a good kit. Shame about the squashy rubber tyres, I’d have liked them in plastic really.

As for the tank maintenance crew I’m planning on buying a 1/48 King Tiger and putting it on a proper base with hatches open etc with the crew busy working on her.

The Flakpanzer looks like a great kit too. I’m going to be painting it to the cammo scheme as best I can but the loaders, gunner and commander are shown in winter uniform-does this mean I need to white wash my Flakpanzer or is it optional?

Thanks guys & ATVB,

Ben [:)]

Great score, Hinsky.

Nice family heirlooms you have there. Display them proudly.

Hey OLD man you did pretty good.[party] Those pictures are priceless.

Happy Birthday bro Tony the Mutt

Cheers lads,

It’s been a great day. My folks have just taken me out for a lovely slap up meal and we are (hopefully) going to Bovington tomorrow if Mum’s back is ok.

Any ideas on the vehicle in the picture? Whitewash? Will I be ok brush painting Tamiya acrylics in very small areas?

I use other brands to brush on mostly but I have brushed Tamiya on small areas or parts. Try to get it done in one coat because if you go back over the same spot what you’ve already applied could or will roll right off. Tamiya needs to be totally dry to brush on another layer. That’s what i’ve experienced anyway.

Good Luck Tony the Mutt

Happy Birthday Hinksey! It looksliek you have done well today! Enjoy! [#toast]

My Guess at the a/car photo with wheels missing is:-

Humber Mk. II Armoured Car.

If I could just score being 30 again at my next birthday, (begin Clint Eastwood from In the Line of Fire) that’d be allright by me (/end Clint).

Happy Birthday and congrats on the haul of armor stuff! The family heirlooms are also something to be proud of. [tup]

[bday]Hinsky!

Cool haul!!

Oh man…I remember 30! So loooong ago…! [sigh]

Hey thanks lads, you guys are the best!

I’ve only been a forum member for a few months and have only been model building a few months but you have made me feel sooo welcome!

The kits are great, I’m going to buy a 1/48 King Tiger (I already have a Tiger I) and leave the decals off and make a mini diorama, nothing special, just a nice base and I’ll set the maintenance crew up around it in the process of reloading and about to give her a lick of paint etc…that could be good imo?

The medals were awesome, I really didn’t expect that!

One question; I’ll be painting the crew in winter uniforms. Does that mean the tank would have been whitewashed or is it optional? The instructions say to paint the gun barrels a very dark brown, I can’t remember the Tamiya number-surely they should be a metalcoate black?

I bought all the Tamiya paints called for in the instructions yesterday so I’ll be starting shortly after writing this post. Phil, thaks for the link btw, I did read that yesterday and I’ve got some Tamiya thinner so if I need to I can experiment a bit. I painted that awful diecast hull in the base yellow yesterday in preparation for beginning work today and the paint brushed on fine-you just cant hang about too long!

Thanks again lads,

Ben [:)]

Hey there Ben,

The instructions say X-10 (Gunmetal) for the gun barrels. You may have read that as XF-10, which is Flat Brown.

PS: Remember to lighten the Dark Yellow, as out of the bottle, it’s a bit dark and a bit green. I find about a 1:1 mix of Dark Yellow and Deck Tan gives a nice warm tone. Remember that it will darken up when you weather/wash.
