A common component to many WWII German armor vehicles I’ve noticed is what I can only describe as a flattened & elongated “German helmet” sitting atop a short post, typically mounted near the front left fender of various staff vehicles, trucks, half-tracks, etc… What is this component properly called, and what purpose did it serve?
…sounds like you are talking about the “Notek Light”…this was a lamp that was used in blackout conditions…the helmet shape is the metal hood that directs the light to the ground…
That makes sense. Thanks for solving the mystery!
Dang, Manny - you’re quick…
…lol…had to think a minute since the Notek is much smaller than a helmet, but figured that it did somewhat resemble a helmet…
A freind of mine has a real one. The top “helmet shaped” thing is made of Bakelite, an early form of plastic. I always thougnt they were just stamped metal. Seems to me that the Germans always made things the hard way! modelbob@hotmail
