What do you do with extra parts?

A while back I built the Airfix B-57B. I made the classic glossy black version. The kit includes parts to make the RB-57E and the B-57G. This kit has extra nacelles, rockets, bombs, bomb bay doors, nose pieces, etc. What do other modelers do with parts they don’t use?

I personally save the box (of any given kit) with those parts and unused decals in them. If I ever need a part for future use it’s all in one source…although I’m sure there’s a better way that saves space.

I have several boxes of similar “spare” parts. Bombs in one, air to air stuff in another, landing gear parts in another, crew figures in another, etc.

Lots of folks package them up and mail them to me!

Seriously, I dont save many decals, but I dont believe I have thrown away an extra part in 10 years. I’m one of the " I’ll use it one of these days" guys. You never know…

Get ourself a compartmental box and start putting your spares in that. I have one for AC, one for armor adn one for figgies

Never throw away anything!

I’ve been saving extra parts, including what I strip off models that I’m gonna trash for 40 years…

I’ve got at least 6 boxes of spare parts, from PE to plastic, aircraft to armour, you never know when that 1/35 Panther gun barrel will come in handy!

Karl

I keep them all in a box and use them to detail bland kits…wheels, weapons,PE, cars, planes, etc. You never know what you’re going to need.

KEEP THEM! FOR THE LOVE OF PLASTIC KEEP THEM!

I have a Plethora of Parts which I tap into for various projects.

Got to agree with the others. Keep all your spares. Never know when they will come in handy on another project.

Regards, Rick

i used to keep them in the original box, with the instructions and any spares. those boxes go into rubbermaid totes. i’m starting to consolidate, putting spares into ziploc freezer bags, and throw out the old boxes, i’m sad to see some of the box art go, but i need space more than nostalgia.

I save almost everything. I have a storage compartment for 48th scale and one for 72nd scale.

By the way Hawkeye you are a sick sick man. I just want to know if it contagious so I can come over and get it.[:D[

Keep the spare parts. As mentioned before, you never know when you’re going to need them!

Into my spares box they go!

I kept one of my larger boxes and just keep spare parts in there. A lot of them I left on the sprue, but I cut the sprue down so it only has the parts I’m keeping on it.

Why not cut the box art from the box? I have the top to every one of my builds. If I ever have the space in my studio, I’ll frame them and hang them. Best of both worlds - keep the box art, lose the garbage.

it’s not a bad thought. some had to go, as they were in a soggy basement for a spell. plastic can be cleaned, but the cardboard was nasty! ;O)

Me sick? Yeah buddy, when it comes to plastic spares I am that!!! Come’on over I’ll see you get infected with Plasticsparpartscollectus!

I keep all of the extra parts although I am not nearly as organized as I should be. I have a spare Craftsman toolbox with a nice sized drawer where all of my spares currently reside. Everything from 1/144 to 1/32 scale parts in there, with various scale figures as well. Never know when I might need something. Plus I have a couple of F-105s that are incomplete (part of a winning ebay bid) that I envision turning into some kind of sci-fi Star Wars kind of build, so like the original model builders did with the Millennium Falcon, some of my spares may go into detailing that thing. Whenever I get around to it. But first I suppose I should organize all of my spares … eh, don’t feel like doing that!
